John Finlay studied art history and theory at Essex University (1989-1992) and received an MA in modern art (1993) and a PhD on “Picasso’s Constructions and Assemblages: 1912-1935” from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London (1998). His book Picasso’s World is published by Carlton Books (London) and by Larousse (as Le Monde de Picasso, Paris, 2011). Finlay was previously a Senior Research Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington where, in 2012, he co- authored the “Marcel Duchamp and New Zealand Art: 1967-2007” exhibition catalogue for the Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi, New Zealand. He is the author of Pop! (Goodman Books, London, 2016) and is co-author of the exhibition catalogue Andy Warhol: The Mechanical Art (Fundación Museo Picasso Málaga, La Fábrica, 2017). In 2020, Arcturus (London) published his book Art History. Finlay has also contributed to international journals, publishing articles on Picasso and Giacometti for The Burlington Magazine. He has recently been funded by FABA (Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte, Brussels), and is working on forthcoming projects to do with Picasso’s prints and portraiture. Recently, he contributed to several International Picasso Symposiums, including « Revoir Picasso » (25-28 March 2015, le Musée national Picasso-Paris); « Revoir Picasso » (24-26 March 2016, le Musée national Picasso-Paris) and “Picasso and History” (IV International Congress, 9-11 October 2018, Museo Picasso Málaga). Finlay is currently working on a new book titled Cubism Forever: its Characterization and Continued Dissemination in the Work of Picasso. He is an independent art historian and artist living in Edinburgh, Scotland.
