Use of a survey instrument, which included 97 competency statements with Likert-type scales for the quantitative study of importance and emphasis of competencies. Randomly selected sample from all accredited college/university-based clinical laboratory science programs, hospital-based clinical laboratory science programs, and associate-degree clinical laboratory technician programs. For analysis, the competencies were divided into eight sub-categories. Means for each competency and each sub-category were calculated. Analysis of variance was used to determine any difference among the three program types for each sub-category of competencies. Chi-square analysis was used to determine significant differences for competencies requiring dichotomous responses. With the significant increase in tuberculo...

Four patients (1.3%) were infected with coccidians, 2 with Cryptosporidium parvum and 2 with Cyclospora cayetanensis. No infections with Isospora belli were detected. In comparison, 15 patients (4.8%) had infections with one or more intestinal parasites detected by routine trichrome staining: 5 had Giardia

However, it also would be well-suited for pathology residents, infectious disease personnel, and other health-related disciplinarians who have a need to understand the purpose, principle, and interpretation of molecular diagnostic testing. Molecular diagnostic laboratory practitioners will find the book to be an excellent reference resource. The book is composed of three sections and sixteen chapters. Section I, “Fundamentals of Nucleic Acid Biochemistry: An Overview”, contains three chapters devoted to ‘DNA’, ‘RNA’, and ‘Proteins’. Section II, “Common Techniques in Molecular Biology”, contains six chapters devoted to ‘Nucleic Acid Extraction Methods’, ‘Resolution and Detection of Nucleic Acids’, ‘Analysis and Characterization of Nucleic Acids and Proteins’, ‘Nucleic Acid Amplification’, ‘Chromosomal Structure and Chromosomal Mutations’, ‘Gene Mutations’, and ‘DN...

This hantavirus, a member of the Bunyaviridae family of RNA viruses, is transmitted by its reservoir host Peromyscus maniculatus, the deer mouse. Transmission is by inhalation of aerosolized feces, urine, or saliva from the infected mice. The illness that pursues, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), is characterized initially by mild flu-like symptoms, followed by rapid progression to respiratory distress. There is no established therapeutic regimen and treatment is only supportive. Preventive methods include attempts to minimize contact with the rodents since elimination of the virus is not realistic. In the age of HIV, cancer, and a plethora of emerging infectious diseases, a new virus has brought deadly havoc in the United States and other parts of the world. In 1993, the first documented cases of hantavirus infections appeared in the Four Corners Region of the U.S. Because of mysterious d...

A welcomed edition, Heelan's Cases in Human Parasitology includes cases of emerging, as well as classical parasites, along with wonderfully colored photomicrographs of the organisms in question. As stated in the introduction, the purpose of the book is to “present cases solely involving parasites to supplement conventional textbooks in human parasitology and to provide an interesting and educational challenge to health care scientists.” The book contains 62 cases of patients who presented to an emergency department or to their physician with symptoms of a parasitic infection. The book is divided into five sections: Intestinal Protozoa; Blood and Tissue Protozoa; Cestodes, Trematodes, and Intestinal Nematodes; Blood and Tissue Nematodes; and Challenging Cases. The latter section also includes some infections in patients with symptoms closely resembling pa...

This article suggests a course curriculum to incorporate diagnostic virology instruction into existing medical technology programs. Educational curricula should incorporate didactic and, when possible, clinical practicum instruction in clinical and diagnostic virology. This instruction should include biological, epidemiological, clinical, and diagnostic laboratory aspects, as well as information on available antiviral therapy for human viral groups. The resourceful instructor can combine lecture content, laboratory activities, and instructional aids to make the study of virology a meaningful component of the medical technology curriculum.

Primary care practitioners need to be aware of the overt and covert signs and symptoms of these parasitic infections. This article focuses on the diagnosis and management of these common parasites.

Specific inclusion criteria were used to screen 146 participants. The presence of a mucopurulent cervical discharge was the only criterion significantly associated with infection. Only 12% of the sample used condoms alone or in combination with another birth control method, and only 31% of the women discussed with their partner their own or their partner's sexual history. Thirty-eight percent of the sample reported a history of one to four episodes of a sexually transmitted disease, and 21% of the women stated they had had two or more sexual partners within the past 6 months. Health providers, counselors, and women themselves must address this health issue with more assertive behavior and communication skills.
