An Economic Analysis of Airport Baggage Routing and Airline Security, 2011
Abstract: Part of American Airlines (AA) and American Eagle (AE) financial loss experienced at W... more Abstract:
Part of American Airlines (AA) and American Eagle (AE) financial loss experienced at Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) in the past years are contributions from cumulative large number of mishandled bags due to the inefficiency in baggage handling, routing processes and associated security measures at DCA. There is no work done before in analyzing the Information Technology (IT) influence on the economic impact and consequences of airport baggage routing and security. Studying and analyzing the AA and AE mishandled baggage process patterns will provide interesting insight into identifying major problem areas of inefficiency and technology investment used in the baggage handling operations. In this research, literature reviews of Transportation Security Administration (TSA), airlines baggage operations and competition will be analyzed. The role of enhanced baggage security measures deployed with associated technology. Collected raw data from AA and AE, processed into structured data, performed descriptive statistical analysis and discovered interesting findings. Applicable suggestions and solutions on baggage issues were made to the aviation industry.
