Research paper thumbnail of Time-resolved resonance Raman study of the. delta. delta. * excited state of Re sub 2 Cl sub 8 sup 2 minus and Re sub 2 Br sub 8 sup 2 minus

The Tr³ spectra exhibit Raman peaks that are assigned to the three symmetric vibrations of the excited state: the Re-Re stretch, Re-X stretch, and the Re-Re-X deformation. In addition, a depolarized peak attributed to an asymmetric X-Re-X bend is observed. Comparison of the TRâ results to single-crystal vibronic spectra reported by others clearly shows the effects of crystal constraints and observation time scale upon the strucutre of the δδ* excited state. The TR³ data, obtained in solution on the nanosecond time scale, indicate that the excited state relaxes to a staggared molecular structure (Dâ or D{sub 4d} symmetry). The vibronic data, obtained on single crystals under cryogenic conditions, are consistent with an eclipsed (D{sub 4h}) structure, similar to that of the ground state. A comparative...

The DMA is performed on polymer films in the tensile geometry with IR measurement in the transmission mode. By careful analysis of the IR data, dynamic molecular motion in response to the deformation can be visualized and used to explain the viscoelastic behavior of the polymer sample obtained from the analysis of the stress and strain responses. The DMA-FTIR technique is demonstrated in both the oscillatory small deformation mode of sinusoidal modulation and the linear large deformation mode of creep/recovery studies of an industrially important elastomer, Estane. Conventional 2D-correlation analysis is used to analyze the in-phase and quadrature data obtained from the conventional experiment; while generalized 2D-correlation is demonstrated by analyzing the multiple spectra obtained at different times during the creep/recovery process. .

Research paper thumbnail of Solid state chalcophosphate compounds of actinide elements

AIP Conference Proceedings

ABSTRACT This work involves the exploration of ternary and quaternary compounds of the actinide c... more ABSTRACT This work involves the exploration of ternary and quaternary compounds of the actinide chalcogenides using a Zintl ion building block approach. Zintl ions are closed shell, main-group ions that can coordinate to other elements in the compound in such a way that builds up the structure. A common Zintl ion in the chalcophosphate family is the ethane-like (P2Se6)4- anion, which has been found to bond to main group, transition metal and lanthanide elements in a variety of coordination modes. To achieve our goal of new actinide-metal Zintl phase material synthesis, we are employing a low-to-moderate temperature (300 °C-800 °C) molten salt technique. This technique utilizes low-melting binary alkali chalcogen salts like K2Se3 in combination with excess chalcogen as the oxidizing agent for the actinide metal and other main group elements to be incorporated into the final structure. This departure from conventional (high-temperature) routes to solid-state materials allows for formation and isolation of metastable phases with complex, low-dimensional structures not seen in the binary compounds. Prior to our studies, three quaternary compounds of actinide chalcophosphates were reported in the literature: K2UP3Se9, Rb4U4P4Se26 and KTh2Sb2Se6. The known ternary and quaternary chalcogen compounds of the actinides have thus far exhibited rich structural chemistry. .

Cryoresonance Raman observations (10-77 K) are reported for selected azurins, stellacyanin, the plastocyanins, and the laccases. Isotope studies employing ⁶³Cu/⁶⁵Cu and H/D substitution are reported for selected azurins and stellacyanin, allowing identification of modes having significant copper-ligand

Changes in the interatomic spacing as well as shifts of several of the vibrational bands as a function of pressure were measured up to ∼10 GPa. The changes in interatomic spacing and shifts of the vibrational bands are compared to those of polytetrafluoroethylene, showing the effects of copolymerization and reduced crystallinity. The high-pressure behavior of polymers is a relatively unexplored field but is becoming increasingly important due to applications where polymers experience extreme conditions.
