Despite the plethora of literature reporting on the experiences of internationally trained nurses, only limited work has been done regarding understanding the experiences of Migrant African nurses. Thus, this study sought to synthesize existing qualitative studies to develop in-depth understanding of the transitioning experiences of migrant African nurses, their career progression and to highlight existing gaps to guide future studies as well as inform policies. Method A meta-synthesis was performed and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and the Enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of qualitative research statement. Newly graduated nurses, who possess the competence to function as Registered Nurses, will soon recognize that lecture-based, passive delivery of content is not sufficient to deal with the complex healthcare environment. Aim This study aimed to compare the effects of a blended video watching and peer learning program and the usual lecture-based program on the levels of satisfaction and self-confidence in learning, perceptions of peer learning, and academic performance of students enrolled in a master’s nursing program. Methods A quasi-experimental study was conducted. The program was offered to Master of Science in Nursing students during Spring 2021 (intervention group, n = 46), while the usual face-to-face lectures and tutorial classes were provided to students enrolled during Fall 20...

Participants included older adults aged at least 60 years who were living within the service area, used a smartphone, and had at least 1 of the following problems: chronic pain, hypertension, or diabetes. Data were analyzed from May 1 to 10, 2022.InterventionsParticipants were randomly assigned to the mHealth with interactivity (mHealth+I) group, mHealth group, or control group. Participants in the mHealth+I...

Incorporating an integrated health-social partnership model to support the app usage when further help is needed by the older adults might maximize the apps' benefits in the long term.ObjectivesThis study aimed to examine the benefits of adding nursing interaction supported by a health-social partnership model in the use of mHealth, and the sustained beneficial effects on psychological outcomes, including quality of life, self-efficacy, and depression, among older adults after the completion of the program.MethodsA three-arm, randomized controlled trial design was adopted. Community-dwelling older adults with chronic pain, hypertension, or diabetes, were randomly assigned to either the mHealth, mHealth with interactivity, or control group. Subjects in both the mHealt...

This study aimed to map and understand the global trends in palliative care (PC)-related COVID-19 research and provide quantitative evidence to guide future studies. We systematically searched four databases between 1st January 2020 and 25th April 2022. The VOSviewer, Gephi, and R software were utilized for data analysis and results visualization. A total of 673 articles were identified from the databases between 1st January 2020 and 25th April 2022. Canada (6.2%), Australia (5.4%), and the United Kingdom (3.8%) were the most productive countries regarding articles published per million confirmed COVID-19 cases. A lack of international collaborations and an uneven research focus on PC across countries with different pandemic trajectories was observed. The PC research in question focused on cancer, teleh...

Methods: Arksey and O’Malley scoping review design with narrative synthesis was employed and reported following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Primary studies reporting PC interventions in the burn unit were considered for inclusion. CINAHL via EBSCO, PubMed, EMBASE via OVID, Web of Science, and gray literature sources were searched from inception to June 2021. Results: Fifteen studies emerging from high-income settings were retained. Data were organized around three concepts: components of palliative/ end of life care in the burn unit; models of integration; and outcomes. The components of interventions based on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Critical Care End-of Life Group domains include decision-making, communication, symptom management and comfort care, spiritual support, and emotional and practical support for families. To gain insight into the nature of these services and provide direction to future actions, there is a need for a comprehensive review that ascertains the components of these services, integration models, and outcomes. METHODS A scoping review design was employed and reported according to the PRISMA extension guidelines for scoping reviews. Extensive searches in peer-reviewed databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Medline) and grey literature sources (Trove, MedNar, OpenGrey, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) were undertaken and supplemented with hand searching. Titles, abstracts, and full text were reviewed in duplicate. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they reported on a PC intervention implemented in the ED for adults. Codes were formulated across the included studies which facilitated the conduct of a narrative synthesis. RESULTS Twenty-three studies were retained with the majority (n=15) emerging from the United States. The components of PC interventions in the ED were categorized as: 1) screening 2) goals of care discussion and communication 3) managing pain and other distressing symptoms in the ED 4) transitions across care settings 5) end-of-life care 6) family/ caregiver support 7) ED staff education. Traditional PC consultations and integrated ED-PC services were the main modes of delivery. PC in the ED can potentially improve patient symptoms, facilitate access to relevant services, reduce length of stay, improve care at the end of life; facilitate bereavement and post-bereavement support for family members; and improve ED staff confidence in delivering PC. CONCLUSION PC implementation in the ED may potentially improve patient and family outcomes. More studies are however needed to standardize trigger or screening tools. More prospective studies are also needed to test PC interventions in the ED.

COVID-19 has further fostered the widespread use of this new technology, which can improve access to care while protecting the community from exposure to infection by direct personal contact, and reduce the time and cost of traveling for both health care users and providers. This is especially true for community-dwelling older adults who have multiple chronic diseases and require frequent hospital visits. Nurses are globally recognized as health care professionals who provide effective community-based care to older adults, facilitating their desire to age in place. However, to date, it is unclear whether the use of telehealth can facilitate their work of promoting self-care to community-dwelling older adults. Objective This review aims to summarize findings from randomized controlled trials on the effect of nurse-led telehealth self-car...

For densely populated regions in the world, this may have been challenging given the proximity of people to one other. Thus, this brief report sought to compare the measures across 2 densely populated locations, Hong Kong and Gaza. Epidemiological data was obtained from governmental online repositories and was compared with the data presented by the Johns Hopkins coronavirus map to ensure consistency. Descriptive statistics were used to interpret the data obtained over the period of the study. The data suggested that although Hong Kong and Gaza implemented similar strategies, Gaza recorded marginally higher cases compared with Hong Kong in the same timeframe. The strategies implemented in both settings included border closures, social distancing, proper hand hygiene, and mask usage. Cultural and socio-demographic differences may have played a part in this variation in case numbers, in addition to lessons Hong Kong had previously learned from a similar outbreak. As the pandemic is ongoing it is essential that public sensitization to adherence to precautionary measures at the personal/family level does not occur.
