However, despite this fact, most research has focused on supporting those with visual or hearing impairments and less attention has been paid to cognitive impairments. The purpose of this study is to analyse touch gestures used for touchscreens and identify which gestures are suitable for individuals living with Down syndrome (DS) or other forms of physical or cognitive impairments. With this information, app developers can satisfy Design for All (DfA) requirements by selecting adequate gestures from existing lists of gesture sets. Twenty touch gestures were defined for this study and a sample group containing eighteen individuals with Down syndrome was used. A tool was developed to measure the performance of touch gestures and participants were asked to perform simple tasks that involved the repeated use of these twenty gestures. Three variables are analysed to establish whether they influence ...

Together with each individual’s attitudes and general skill sets, this specific ability plays an important role in technical professions such as engineering. The components of spatial ability can be enhanced using targeted training or educational programs. This study analyses the levels of spatial skills in first-year engineering students at two universities, one in Spain and one in Peru. The purpose of the study is to establish the extent of symmetry between these study groups in terms of their spatial skills. Initial comparisons indicate that the Peruvian students have a lower level of spatial skill prior to training than their Spanish cohorts. AR-based training delivering representational system content was used with engineering students at both universities to boost spatial abilities. The results obtained indicate the training was effective, as b...

Research paper thumbnail of Spatial Skills and Perceptions of Space: Representing 2D Drawings as 3D Drawings inside Immersive Virtual Reality

In order to draw architectural spaces, it is necessary to have the ability to visualize and manipulate them mentally, which leads us to the concept of spatial skills; but it also requires a development of spatial perception to express them in the drawings. The purpose of this research is to analyze the improvement of spatial skills through the full-scale sketching of architectural spaces in virtual immersive environments and to analyze spatial perception in reference to the capture of spatial sensations in virtual immersive environments. Spatial skills training was created based on the freehand drawing of architectural spaces using Head Mounted Displays (HMD) and registered the spatial sensations experienced also using HMD, but only in previously modeled realis...

For this study, learning objects were designed as a resource to support teaching and encourage autonomous learning practices in the subject of Graphic Expression belonging to the Architecture Degree. An analysis of their application was performed that involved evaluating the "usability" ratings of students who tested the learning objects. Survey results reveal positive scores were consistently awarded to all three usability components (effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction), indicating receptiveness to said learning objects on the part of students. This positive feedback has proven encouraging with regards to continuing with the design and development of new learning objects, and the study of their application in other areas.

In this article, we explain how augmented reality (AR) can be used to better educate tourists and visitors about the sites they choose to visit. Using the Temple of Debod in Madrid and its structures as an example, we focus on applying AR to the engravings on the walls of the temple. Through AR, these engravings take on a new life, giving visitors a more interesting and interactive experience that better educates them about the temple itself and about the different historical periods in which the 'graffiti' were engraved. Augmented reality, combined with audio commentary in different languages, will help visitors to locate the different graffiti more easily and appreciate the true wonder of the site and the motives behind the engravings.

Activities based on practice with an augmented reality enhanced exercise book had a positive effect on students' spatial ability, measured by both MRT and DAT:SR tests. To promote students' autonomy, a YouTube tutorial for each type of exercise was developed. This allowed greater freedom for students to advance at their own pace during the training sessions. An evaluation and satisfaction questionnaire based on a five level Likert scale was submitted by participants. The experience was considered very positive by students.
