Using a commercial indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) kit, 118 polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive and BLV antibody-positive samples were identified; the concordance between tests was substantial. A phylogenetic study of 27 partial sequences of the env gene gp30 was performed. Four mutations were detected involving the PXXP motif in the cytoplasmic domain of the transmembrane protein. This study provided evidence of the efficacy of PCR for the detection of BLV and demonstrated the presence of genotype 1 BLV in Mexico.

Sera from 54 caprine fetuses and 65 ovine fetuses were collected and evaluated by the indirect ELISA technique. Antibodies were detected in five caprine fetuses of 80 days of gestation and in four ovine fetuses of 90 to 100 days of gestation; three caprine fetuses and two ovine fetuses of 60 to 65 days of gestation were suspicious. The possibility of uterine infection with these retroviruses is confirmed, and its consequences in current disease control and eradication strategies are discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of Maternal experience in Romanov sheep impairs mother-lamb recognition during the first 24 hours postpartum

Here, 8 primiparous and 7 maternally experienced (multiparous) ewes and their lambs were studied. Maternal selectivity was evaluated at 3 hours postpartum during two consecutive periods of 3 minutes each. Ewes were tested with their own lambs and then with alien lambs. High- and low-pitched bleats, attempts and rejection to the udder, aggressive behavior toward the lambs, and amount of time that the mother permits the lamb to be near the udder were recorded. At 8 hours postpartum, a double-choice test was performed to assess distal recognition of the lamb by the mother; in the lambs, a double-choice test was performed at 24 hours of age. Latency to reach one of the animals, frequency to visit each, time spent near the choice subject, time spent looking toward them, and frequency of vocalization were recorded. A Mann–Whitney U-test was used for between-group comparisons, and a Wilcoxon test was used for within-group comparisons. At 3 hours postpartum, most of the ewes (multiparous and primiparous) were selective; however, multiparous ewes tended to have a higher index of acceptance of their own lambs than primiparous ewes (2.74 ± 0.66 vs 0.56 ± 0.76, P = 0.083). At 8 hours postpartum, multiparous ewes spent more time looking toward their own lambs than primiparous ewes (50 ± 11.8 vs. 15.8 ± 8.9 s, P = 0.018). Compared to primiparous ewes, multiparous ewes spent more time near their own lambs than near alien lambs (84.85 ± 19.6 vs. 21.7 ± 9.7 s, P = 0.05), and more time looking toward their own lambs than toward alien lambs (P = 0.018). At 24 hours after birth, lambs born to multiparous ewes spent more time near their own mothers than near alien mothers (P = 0.043) and visited their own mothers more than they visited alien mothers (P = 0.05). In contrast, lambs born to primiparous ewes did not show similar behaviors (P ≥ 0.73). In conclusion, in Romanov sheep, maternal experience affects mostly non olfactory recognition of the lamb and also influences the ability of the lamb to recognize its mother.

The aim of this paper is determine the distribution and number of cells involved in the immune response in prepuce and pelvic urethra of rams, without apparent clinical alterations in testicle, epididymis and prepuce. The distribution of some of the cells involved in the immune response at the level of the prepuce and the pelvic urethra was quantified in four one-year-old rams seronegative for B. ovis and A. seminis and without apparent lesions in the testicles, the epididymis, and the prepuce. At the moment of slaughter, samples were taken from the preputial fornix and the pelvic urethra and placed in 10% formalin and under freezing conditions. CD4, CD8, WC1, CD45RO, CD14 and CD1b cells were demonstrated by immunohistochemistry, and immunoglobulin-containing cells (ICC) of the IgA, IgG and IgM classes we...

Unincubated White Leghorn fertile eggs were injected with isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INH) through a hole in the shell. A control group was injected with normal saline, a second group with INH plus vitamin B6, and a third group was left unopened. 2. INH, in the doses we used, proved to be lethal for more than 50% of the early chick embryos, and also produced important developmental alterations. 3. Alterations produced by INH were primarily observed at the level of the neural epithelium, particularly at its cephalic portion. The most important ones were a degenerative and necrotic process of the neural epithelium, and a distortion of the normal anatomical relations of the cephalic structures. 4. The embryonic mortality and developmental alterations induced by INH were prevented to a considerable extent by the concurrent injection of pyridoxine hydrochloride and INH. 5. The preventive action of vitamin B6 suggests that toxicity of INH in the chicken embryos is due to the antivitam...

Colonization was analyzed during twenty days post-infection. Twelve one-month-old pigs were intratracheally inoculated with a Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae-infected lung homogenate. Pigs were sacrificed on days 1, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 post-infection, two each day; six control animals were inoculated with Friis media. Pneumonic lesions were evaluated and analyzed by M. hyopneumoniae isolation and histological studies. Direct immunofluorescence was performed to determined colonization. Fluorescence was positive starting on day four; cilium clumping was evident from day eight. Mycoplasma installation started in a spot of the bronchial mucosa and extended to form a full fluorescence ring on day 20.

A control group was injected with normal saline and a second group was left unopened. Iproniazid in the doses we used proved to be lethal for approximately 50% of the chick embryos, while we cannot demonstrate other developmental alterations, either in the macroscopical or in the serial histological study.

Research paper thumbnail of Cinética de la infección experimental en cerdos con Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae usando inmunofluorescencia Kinetics of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae experimental infection in pigs using immunofluorescence
