Methods: For this, 48 Class II malocclusion patients were selected and divided into two groups according to the treatment protocol: group 1 consisted of dental study casts and initial cephalograms of 22 patients treated with the Pendulum appliance, with an initial mean age of 14.44 years and group 2, comprised of dental study casts and initial cephalograms of 26 patients treated with two maxillary premolar extractions and a initial mean age of 13.66 years. The occlusal outcomes were evaluated on dental casts with the PAR occlusal index and the treatment time of each group was calculated by the clinical records. The variables were compared by the t tests. Results and conclusions: The results demonstrated that the occlusal outcomes were similar between the groups, however, the two maxillary premolar extractions protocol provided occlusal outcomes in a shorter treatment time than the Pendulum treatment.

This paper investigates the behavior of a composite beam to reinforced concrete wall moment-resistant joint configuration. The proposed joint configuration is a simple solution with structural capacity to connect these types of members in a non-seismic region. An experimental campaign was conducted within the work programme of a RFCS research project that demonstrated the structural efficiency of the joint.

Because the design of steelreinforced anchorages using the available methodologies (namely, from the CEB Design Guide, , and ACI 318-08) may lead to excessively conservative results, experimental studies were conducted at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra dealing with cast-in-place headed anchors. The aim of this study is the evaluation of the effect of hanger reinforcement on the behavior of steel-headed anchors embedded in concrete subjected to tension loads. A total of 40 laboratory tests, divided into two groups, were performed, dealing with plain concrete; hanger and usual grid surface reinforcement; and the variation of the member thickness, embedment depth, and proximity of the concrete member edges. Some conclusions from the tests are analyzed and discussed.

Methods: The experimental group comprised 40 Class II malocclusion subjects, divided into 2 groups: group 1 consisted of 20 patients (11 boys, 9 girls) at a mean pretreatment age of 13.17 years, treated with the Jones jig appliance for 0.91 years; group 2 comprised 20 patients (8 boys, 12 grls) at a mean pretreatment age of 13.98 years, treated with the pendulum appliance for 1.18 years. Only active treatment time of molar distalization was evaluated in the predistalization and postdistalization lateral cephalograms. Molar, second premolar, and incisor angular and linear variables were obtained. The intergroup treatment changes in these variables were compared with independent t tests. Results: The maxillary second premolars showed greater mesial tipping and extrusion in the Jones jig group, indicating more anchorage loss during molar distalization with this appliance. The amounts and the monthly rates of molar distalization were similar in both groups. Conclusions: The Jones jig group showed greater mesial tipping and extrusion of the maxillary second premolars. The mean amounts and the monthly rates of first molar distalization were similar in both groups. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 2009;135:336-42)

Methods: The sample comprised 84 subjects with Class I and Class II malocclusions, treated with and without extractions. Group 1 comprised 44 subjects with an initial mean age of 12.96 years treated without extractions. Group 2 included 40 subjects with an initial mean age of 13.01 years treated with 4 premolar extractions. Data were obtained from dental casts at the pretreatment, posttreatment, and long-term posttreatment stages. Intergroup comparisons were performed with t tests. To verify the correlations among the relapse of overjet, overbite, and anterior crowding, the Pearson correlation test was used. Results: Maxillary incisor irregularity and its relapse in the nonextraction group were significantly greater at the long-term posttreatment stage and the long-term posttreatment period, respectively. Long-term postreatment overjet changes were similar in the groups. Overbite and its relapse were significantly greater in the extraction group in the long-term posttreatment stage and period, respectively. There was a positive correlation of the relapse of mandibular incisor crowding with the relapse of overjet and overbite, and also a correlation of overjet and overbite relapses. Conclusions: There was greater maxillary crowding relapse in the nonextraction group and greater overbite relapse in the extraction group. There were significant and positive correlations of overjet and overbite relapses with mandibular anterior crowding relapse and consequently between overjet and overbite relapses. Questionnaires containing illustrations of certain aspects of malocclusions (facial patterns, facial asymmetries, unbalanced profiles, smiles and intraoral views) were handed out to patients and local professionals in order to ease a comparision of the esthetic valorization degree between both of these groups. Tables and statistic tests demonstrated the existing differences and brought about important information for the clinician to recognize the patient´s esthetic perspectives, leading to a better mutual understanding throughout the treatment.

The model proposed is the component method extended to this type of joint. The characterization of the active components is therefore performed in terms of force-deformation curves. In this type of joint, special attention is paid to the steel-concrete connection where “new” components, not covered in EN 1993-1-8, are activated. The application of the model allows the designer to obtain the joint properties in terms of the moment-rotation curve. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified by comparing it with available experimental and numerical results. The latter were developed in the FE program ABAQUS and previously validated by experimental results.

The experimental group consisted of 21 patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances from whom cephalometric headfilms were obtained at the pretreatment, posttreatment, and postretention stages. Two control groups were used. The first, with ages comparable with the experimental group before treatment, was used only to characterize it. The second control group, with normal occlusion, was longitudinally followed for a period comparable with the posttretention period and was used to compare the changes between groups during this period. The differences between the observation stages in the experimental group were analyzed with paired t tests, and the postretention changes were compared with the changes of the second control group with independent t tests. A statistically significant decrease of the obtained anterior overbite was demonstrated at the end of the postretention period. The primary factor that contributed to the overbite decrease was the smaller vertical development of the maxillary and mandibular incisors in the postretention period. Neither the pretreatment anterior open bite amount nor the magnitude of correction was associated with the long-term overbite decrease. However, 61.9% of the sample had a clinically stable open bite correction. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 2003;124:265-76)

Ten dry human mandibles were scanned at voxel sizes of 0.2 and 0.4 mm. Craniometric anatomical landmarks were identified twice by two independent operators on the multiplanar reconstructed and on volume rendering images that were generated by the software Dolphin®. Subsequently, physical measurements were performed using a digital caliper. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman were used for evaluating accuracy and reliability (p<0.05). Excellent intraobserver reliability and good to high precision interobserver reliability values were found for linear measurements from CBCT 3D and multiplanar images. Twelve male minipigs were anesthetized and given physical and radiographic examinations. The presence and chronology of tooth eruption from 3 to 15 months of age were assessed, and the radiographic results were interpreted by two certified researchers, who obtained a high index of agreement (j > 0.81). The eruption chronology was similar to that reported for domestic swine and other minipig lineages. The results indicate that it is possible to use the BR-1 minipig in dental research.

Twelve male minipigs (BR-1 Minipigs) were chosen at random. Two animals each at 3, 5, 7, 9, 12 and 15 months of age were anaesthetised and subjected to radiographic examinations to assess six techniques. Three intra-oral and three extra-oral techniques, standardised for humans, were used with variations of the angle of incidence of the X-ray beams, focus-film distance and exposure time. Two film positioners were developed for the intra-oral techniques. Two examiners then chose the radiographs with the least image distortion, greatest clarity and least superimposition of images. For each technique, the suitable angle of incidence of the X-ray beams, the focus-film distance and exposure time that produced the highest quality radiographs were standardised.
