Although nitinol is already being used for intraocular surgeries such as lens fragmentation and foreign body extraction, little is known about its intracapsular, long-term behavior. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long-term uveal and capsular biocompatibility of a nitinol CTR placed in the capsular bag after cataract surgery in an animal model. Method: After approval of the study by the Institutional Animal Care and the Ethics Committee, bilateral phacoemulsification was performed in 6 rabbits; 1 eye received a nitinol CTR and the other a control polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) open-ended ring. Ophthalmic evaluation for the presence of infections in all 12 eyes was performed after 7 days, 4 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months follow-up period. After a follow-up period of 6 months, the eyes were enucleated, and a histopathologic evaluation was performed. Results: Neither of the gro...

Ocular injuries due to this coleoptera have not previously been reported. An 11-year-old boy experienced an eye injury while trying to place a bombardier beetle inside an anthill. The boy was diagnosed with a second-degree burn on the skin of the upper right eyelid and conjunctival and corneal erosion in the right eye. The condition resolved completely after 2 weeks of appropriate treatment. Education about the dangers of playing with insects is crucial to prevent this type of lesions.

In a previous paper we reported 29 patients with granuloma tous anterior uveitis, blepharoconjunct ivitis, periorbital dermatitis, marginal keratitis and elevation in intra ocular pressure (lOP), suspected to be caused by meti pranolol (Glauline). With the approval of the District Ethics Committee 7 of those patients were rechallenged with metipranolol 0.3% compared to timolol maleate 0.5% in a double blind trial. The 7 metipranolol treated eyes developed an adverse reaction within 14 days. Meti pranolol (Glauline) has been conclusively proven to cause granulomatous anterior uveitis, blepharoconjunct ivitis and elevation in lOP, adverse effects never previously reported with any of the ophthalmic topical beta-block ers. The multi dose preparation...

METHODS: In this prospective cases series, PRK was performed in myopic patients. A circular cellulose cell sponge soaked with 20% ethanol solution was positioned over the central cornea for 50 seconds. The adhesions between the epithelium and corneal stroma were loosened using a Weck-Cel spear, and finally, central loosened corneal epithelium was easily lifted off in a circular epitheliorhexis-like technique. Corneal photoablation was then performed using the usual nomograms and protocols for myopic surface photoablation treatments. Manifest refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively, and adverse effects were also assessed. RESULTS: The study enrolled 248 eyes of 144 consecutive patients. Mean ...

In this procedure, a circular cellulose cell sponge soaked with 20% ethanol solution is positioned over the central cornea for 50 seconds. The adhesions between the epithelium and the corneal stroma are loosened using another weck cell spear, and finally, the central corneal epithelium is easily lifted off with the same weck cell spear in a circular manner using epitheliorhexis technique. The maneuver has been used in 838 cases, resulting in straightforward and uniform removal of the corneal epithelium with minimal patient discomfort. No intraoperative or early postoperative complications were observed.

The 13 millimetres CTRs were placed in a round rigid container with an 11 millimetres diameter and submerged in BSS at body temperature (37 degrees Celsius). CTRs were divided into two groups. Two samples of each model were introduced in the containers and removed and evaluated at 1 month, while the other two samples of each model were introduced in the containers and removed and evaluated at three months. Size and shape of the CTRs were measured at baseline, at 1 month and 3 months. Every measurement was repeated 3 times by two different observers.

More recently, some publications including a small number of eyes have not reported significant complications. 9-17 In our clinic we have had to deal with a large amount of a patients whose flap thickness was not measured during the first treatment (LASIK) and therefore were retreated with PRK.
