From 1991 to 1999 a TB programme was run in a Spanish prison. A cohort study was conducted to know TB incidence and the associated variables. Of 1,050 people studied, 10% were co-infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Twenty-three cases of TB were detected, an incidence rate of 6.39 per 1,000 person-years of follow-up. Multivariate analysis showed HIV-infected patients (RR 4.07, 95%CI 2.61-6.35), and those infected by M. tuberculosis who did not undergo LTIT (RR 10.15, 95%CI 0.90-50.59) to be at greater risk of developing TB. In TST reactors, those co-infected with HIV (RR 10.15, 95%CI 3.80-27.07) and those who had not undergone LTIT (RR 8.53, 95%CI 1.12-64.86) were shown to be at the greatest risk of developing TB. The observed incidence of TB is much higher in prisons than in the community at large. HIV...

The latter motivated by the needs of a real world company. The proposed EDA implements a fairly new mechanism to improve the search of more traditional EDAs. This is the Guided Mutation (GM). EDA-GM generates new solutions by using the information from a probability model, as all EDAs, and the local information from a good known solution. The approach is tested on several instances of HFS-SDST-UM and compared with adaptations of meta-heuristics designed for very similar problems. Encouraging results are reported.

On the stoichiometric surface proline gives two different species at 300K: dissociated and zwitterionic. Upon heating the zwitterionic structure is removed first from the surface followed by the dissociated form. The C1s signal for the COO function is found close to 288.5eV for both forms while the N1s for the dissociated form is found at 400.0eV and that of the zwitterionic from close to 401.8eV. From the attenuation of the Ti2p signal the surface coverage was estimated less than ½ (about 0.35). This smaller coverage than dissociatively adsorbed carboxylic acids on this surface (usually close to ½), is attributed to lateral repulsion caused by the ring of adjacent proline molecules adsorbed on five-fold coordinated Ti cations along the [001] direction. On the reduced surface the amount of zwitterion structure is found two times higher than that on the stoichiometric surface, at 300K, most likely due to the considerable decrease of the amount of surface oxygen available. The stability of the zwitterionic structure on this surface is however found similar to that found on the stoichiometric surface. In addition, evidence of oxidation of reduced Ti cations upon adsorption at 300K is noticed and explained as breaking of the carbon–oxygen bond of a fraction of adsorbed proline. Variable temperature HRXPS has been collected and results indicated that proline is more stable on the reduced surface compared to the stoichiometric surface.

Functional changes were analyzed by small animal positron emission tomography and tissue morphology by immunohistochemistry. Gene expression and protein analysis were used to study the molecular mechanisms governed by MMP-10 in hypoxia. Early after ischemia, MMP-10 deficiency resulted in delayed tissue reperfusion (10%, P < 0.01) and in increased necrosis (2-fold, P < 0.01), neutrophil (4-fold, P < 0.01), and macrophage (1.5-fold, P < 0.01) infiltration. These differences at early time points resulted in delayed myotube regeneration in Mmp10 2/2 soleus at later stages (regenerating myofibers: 30 6 9% WT vs. 68 6 10% Mmp10 2/2 , P < 0.01). The injection of MMP-10 into Mmp10 2/2 mice rescued the observed phenotype. A molecular analysis revealed higher levels of Cxcl1 mRNA (10fold, P < 0.05) and protein (30%) in the ischemic Mmp10 2/2 muscle resulting from a lack of transcriptional inhibition by MMP-10. This was further confirmed using siRNA against MMP-10 in vivo. Our results demonstrate an important role of MMP-10 for proper muscle repair after ischemia, and suggest that chemokine regulation such as Cxcl1 by MMP-10 is involved in muscle regeneration.-

Aim: To study the relationship between cardiac synchrony and left ventricular remodeling after acute myocardial infarction. Material and methods: Forty nine patients aged 59±10 years (77% men) with a first episode of a ST segment elevation MI, were studied. Scintigraphic left ventricular function and synchrony analyses were performed at baseline and after a six months follow-up. Determinations were compared with 33 healthy subjects. Results: At baseline, patients with MI had a decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and significant dyssynchrony, when compared with controls. LVEF was 36.4%±10%, left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) 127±38 mL, interventricular delay (IEV) 29±35 miliseconds (ms), and intraventricular delay (IAV), 234±89 ms. After 6 months, LVEF significantly improved (38%±10%, p =0.042) without significant changes in LVEDV (129±32 mL, p =0.97), IEV (24±17, p =0.96) or IAV (231±97, p =0.34). At baseline there were significant correlations between IAV and LVEF, p =0.004, respectively). These correlations remained significant after 6 months. There was a positive correlation between IAV and LVEDV changes at six months (r =0.403, p =0.04). Conclusions: The development of cardiac dyssynchrony correlates with adverse left ventricular remodeling after MI (Rev Méd Chile 2009; 137: 1457-62). (

Optical confinement has been identified by the project partners as a major source for efficiency improvement of thin film silicon PV modules. One reason of the performance gap between highly efficient laboratory solar cells and industrial modules is the poorer electrical and optical performance of the industrial TCO-covered front glass substrate (TCO glass) which is investigated in this work. The glass substrate in industrial PV modules is about 3 times thicker than in laboratory solar cells where frequently Asahi U-type TCO glass (about 1 mm thick) is used. Therefore, the glass quality has an important impact on the transmission of industrial TCO glass. Reducing the iron-content in the float glass substrate increases the integrated transmission in the wavelength range from 400-800nm by nearly 2%. The electrical properties, namely the electrical carrier mobility, of the industrial TCO layer of AGC has been increased by about 15% by improving the industrial deposition process, resulting in a thinner TCO layer with higher transmission by maintaining the sheet resistance of about 9-10 /sq. Combining both developments the integrated transmission of industrial TCO glass has been increased by more than 2%. The TCO layer properties of Asahi U-type and standard industrial TCO glass (AGC AN10) have been investigated by SEM, AFM, XRD and ARS, showing that the Asahi U TCO scatters red light more effectively into larger angles.

The morphology and structure of nanosized ceria particles prepared by several in vacuo deposition... more The morphology and structure of nanosized ceria particles prepared by several in vacuo deposition methods on a Au(1 1 1) template were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Cerium metal nanoparticles on gold have limited reactivity toward molecular oxygen and NO 2 , due to the formation of Ce-Au alloys, and their oxidation leads to formation of non-uniform substoichiometric three-dimensional (3D) oxide particles. Cerium metal deposition onto condensed multilayers of water or NO 2 generates fully oxidized but poorly ordered ceria particles after annealing. Ultra-thin flat and ordered ceria nanoislands were prepared by deposition of cerium metal on the gold surface at elevated temperatures under an oxygen background pressure. Atomically resolved images show an oxygen-terminated surface of CeO 2 (1 1 1) with oxygen vacancies.

These methods do not search directly the solution space; they do it indirectly through the exploration of the space of heuristics and/or their combinations. This space is named the associated space. The task of finding the best element in the associated space is referred to as the associated problem. This paper presents a formal definition of the associated problem, and investigates several of its properties. An empirical study of the associated problem is performed using a production scheduling problem as experimental environment. Obtained results allow us to partly explain what are the advantages of hyper-heuristic solution representations over other traditional ones, and, to give recommendations on hyperheuristic design.

Research paper thumbnail of Iterated local search vs. hyper-heuristics: Towards general-purpose search algorithms

IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation, 2010

An important challenge within hyper-heuristic research is to design search methodologies that wor... more An important challenge within hyper-heuristic research is to design search methodologies that work well, not only across different instances of the same problem, but also across different problem domains. This article conducts an empirical study involving three different domains in combinatorial optimisation: bin packing, permutation flow shop and personnel scheduling. Using a common software interface (HyFlex), the same algorithms (high-level strategies or hyperheuristics) can be readily run on all of them. The study is intended as a proof of concept of the proposed interface and domain modules, as a benchmark for testing the generalisation abilities of heuristic search algorithms. Several algorithms and variants from the literature were implemented and tested. From them, the implementation of iterated local search produced the best overall performance. Interestingly, this is one of the most conceptually simple competing algorithms, its advantage as a robust algorithm is probably due to two factors: (i) the simple yet powerful exploration/exploitation balance achieved by systematically combining a perturbation followed by local search; and (ii) its parameter-less nature. We believe that the challenge is still open for the design of robust algorithms that can learn and adapt to the available low-level heuristics, and thus select and apply them accordingly.

Predictive control of an Indirect Matrix Converter (IMC) is combined with predictive rotor current control of a DFIG to achieve a very good dynamic response as the rotor currents smoothly follow the applied reference in a±30% range of the generator nominal rpm. Simulation results are presented for constant torque and rotational speed, as well as for variable rotational speed corresponding to a 10 kW generator ...

Therefore, many targeted therapies are in development. The transferrin receptor (TfR) functions in cellular iron uptake through its interaction with transferrin. This receptor is an attractive molecule for the targeted therapy of cancer since it is upregulated on the surface of many cancer types
