An 81-year-old male presented with an ulcerated lesion on the frontal area. The lesion had starte... more An 81-year-old male presented with an ulcerated lesion on the frontal area. The lesion had started three years before with a small ulceration and was initially treated with a cream of betamethasone and fusidic acid twice daily for several months. The clinical impression was ulcerated basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The histopathological findings after surgical excision were consistent with metatypical or basosquamous carcinoma. The importance of metatypical and basosquamous carcinomas is their potential for a more aggressive behaviour than conventional BCC, both regarding local recurrences and metastatic disease. Clinicians should be aware of the more aggressive behaviour of metatypical BCC since it may influence the protocols of follow-up of these patients to timely detect local recurrences and/or metastatic disease.

Subungual exostosis is a relatively uncommon, benign osteocartilaginous tumor of the distal phala... more Subungual exostosis is a relatively uncommon, benign osteocartilaginous tumor of the distal phalanx of the toes or fingers in young adults, considered as a rare variant of osteochondroma. Differential diagnoses include subungual verruca (viral wart), pyogenic granuloma, osteochondroma, amelanotic subungual melanoma and glomus tumour. Misdiagnosis and total onychodystrophy frequently occur as a result of late treatment or inadequate treatment strategy. Dermoscopy could be a useful technique, involved in the diagnostic process, although X-ray examination and histopathology are mandatory for the diagnosis. We report a rare case of subungual exostosis of the great toe associated with repeated trauma of the nail bed. The lack of radiographic and histopathological examination could lead to misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. Para conhecer Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757), a sua vida e a sua obra, e obrigatorio segui-lo em ... more Para conhecer Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757), a sua vida e a sua obra, e obrigatorio segui-lo em Portugal. Todavia, para alem de estudos pontuais, nao existe uma avaliacao rigorosa e completa do rasto portugues de Scarlatti. Do mesmo modo, falta a correcta avaliacao e justificacao da sua obra portuguesa: a que foi intencional e a que produziu e deixou ao cuidado e interesse dos seus amigos. Sem pretender eliminar a lacuna do conhecimento, este trabalho responde simplesmente a um desafio feito a sombra da celebracao do tricentenario do nascimento de Carlos Seixas (1704-1742) e a luz dos manuscritos da Universidade de Coimbra: explicar a presenca de uma sonata de Domenico Scarlatti, como no 10 do indice de um volume com 30 Tocatas de Carlos Seixas.

The author thinks over a definition of family therapy, pointing out the theoretical models that f... more The author thinks over a definition of family therapy, pointing out the theoretical models that form its basis: the General Systems theory, the cybernetics and the pragmatics of human communication. Concerning the family therapy practice the author describes the setting, the supervisor-therapist relation and the family therapist. At last, the author reports the formation of the Portuguese Society for Family Therapy and the different levels that have been worked through, focusing the contemporaneity of this theory.
