The research investigated classroom support provision and the challenges of providing support to students who are blind in a general education classroom at an inclusive secondary school in Botswana. Interviews, observation and questionnaires were used to collect the data. The challenges of providing classroom assistance to students who are blind in general education Biology classrooms are as diverse as the students themselves. The teaching methods some teachers use do not cater for all the students in an inclusive classroom. The main factors leading to this include lack of adequate preparation and shortage of both human and material resources. The class enrolments pose a challenge because the classrooms are over enrolled. The study recommends that special education Biology teachers be increased at the school and more learning support workers equally be hired. Teacher capacity building should also be considered as well as the acquisition of more access technology.

The objectives of the study were to describe and explicate the teaching and learning strategies the school adopts to support students who are blind and project ways for improving the practices. The study made use of the school community and stakeholders as its respondents. The interviews, documents and observations were used to collect data. The data was broadly analysed using descriptions. The research study established that there are a variety of pedagogical practices used to support students in the teaching and learning processes to accommodate students who are blind. It is recommended that the school casts its net even wider to embrace more key stakeholders like parents. The school should further consider more participatory and exploratory teaching and learning styles. The use of access technology could cultivate self-confidence, self-es...

The main purpose was to determine factors that influence the poor academic performance of learners with vision impairment in science subjects at a senior secondary school in Botswana. Using purposeful sampling, 14 learners and 5 teachers were selected for the study. Data collection involved interviews, observation and document analysis. The findings revealed that multiple factors influence the poor performance of learners with vision impairment. The factors include shortage of human and material resources, teaching methods, teacher and learner attitudes. It is very clear from the findings that learners with vision impairment are experiencing challenges in learning science that are a result of deficient pedagogical practices, shortage of specialised teachers of science and material resources. The study, therefore, recommends intensive review of human resource deployment policies and improved monitoring and evaluation of inclusive education practices in schools if learners with vision impairment are to achieve the desired outcomes.

The study was conducted over a two-month period at a school that caters for learners with total blindness. The participants, who included five special education trained teachers and nine learners with visual impairment, were purposively selected. The study utilised interviews and document analysis to collect data. Thematic and content data analyses were done as data from the two data collection methods was integrated. The results of the study indicate that the special education specialist teachers are underutilised in their area of specialty. In addition, the larger school community views it a waste of human resource for specialist special education teachers to instruct learners in braille. Consequently, there is no deliberate program to teach braille to learners with visual impairment especially that both learners and special education teachers have very tight schedules emanating from a packed curriculum and high teaching loads. The onset of the visual impairment also has a significant influence on the rate of learning braille and the development of the sense of touch. The study recommends, among others, a paradigm shift in the inclusive education practices at the school to improve the quality of braille and academic performance of learners with visual impairment.
