Research paper thumbnail of Destructive therapies for cutaneous warts: A review of the evidence

Australian Journal of General Practice

COMMON WARTS (Verruca vulgaris), plantar warts (Verruca plantaris) and flat/plane warts (Verruca ... more COMMON WARTS (Verruca vulgaris), plantar warts (Verruca plantaris) and flat/plane warts (Verruca plana), collectively known as cutaneous warts, are benign growths of the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). In Australia, up to 24% of children and 5% of adults are affected. 1 A break in the epidermal barrier of the skin allows entry of HPV and subsequent infection of basal epithelial cells. HPV replicates alongside the natural lifecycle of epithelial cells, and is eventually released from desquamated keratinocytes on the surface of warts, potentially infecting other sites via direct contact or through fomites. 2 Cutaneous warts generally self-resolve. Up to two-thirds of immunocompetent children experience spontaneous clearance of their cutaneous warts by two years of age. 3 Adults tend to take longer. Patients might request treatment for their warts when they cause discomfort, functional impairment, social ostracism, are numerous, grow large or raise concerns regarding transmission. 4 Treatment for cutaneous warts can be painful, scar, cause pigmentary disturbances and might not be effective. 5 Therefore, clinicians should be wary of the evidence behind the efficacy of cutaneous wart treatment. This review summarises high-quality studies investigating the efficacy of chemical and physical destructive wart therapies. Methods We performed a literature review (up to June 2021) of published articles for wart management from the MEDLINE and Embase databases. No language restrictions were applied. We considered systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials (RCTs), cohort studies and case series. Case reports were excluded. For MEDLINE, we used the Boolean operation to combine MeSH terms 'warts' AND 'therapeutics'. For Embase, we used the Boolean operation to combine MeSH terms 'Verruca vulgaris' AND 'therapy'. We included studies that investigated chemical or physical destructive therapies.

Research paper thumbnail of Prevention and management of acneiform rash associated with EGFR inhibitor therapy: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology

INTRODUCTION Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors are established therapies for adv... more INTRODUCTION Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors are established therapies for advanced lung, colorectal, and head and neck cancers. They commonly cause acneiform eruptions that affect patient quality of life and may lead to discontinuation of therapy. METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis was undertaken to assess strategies for the prevention and reactive management of acneiform rash associated with EGFR inhibitor therapy for advanced lung, colorectal, and head and neck cancers. A systematic Medline, Embase, and EBM Reviews database search was conducted on the 2nd of January 2021. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement was followed and the studies were critically appraised. Studies were selected if they focused on preventing or treating acneiform eruptions in adults being treated for advanced lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and head and neck cancers with EGFR inhibitors. RESULTS Oral antibiotics had the greatest efficacy in preventing grade 2 or higher acneiform eruptions with a relative risk reduction of 40% (RR = .6, 95% CI .46-.79, p < .01). Other treatment modalities did not have statistically significant results. Topical antibiotics had a total relative risk reduction of 19% (RR = .81, 95% CI .45-1.48, p = .5). Vitamin K1 cream did not reduce the relative risk (RR = 1.08, 95% CI .45-1.48, p = .50). Sunscreen had a total relative risk reduction of 25% (RR = .75, 95% CI .49-1.14, p = .18). CONCLUSIONS The results of this meta-analysis reinforce the fact that oral tetracycline antibiotics are the most efficacious prophylactic option for acneiform eruptions in EGFR inhibitors. They should be offered to suitable patients commencing treatment and used with a general skin-care routine involving emollients and avoidance of irritants.

Research paper thumbnail of Osteoporosis Complications in Crohn's Disease Patients: Factors, Pathogenesis, and Treatment Outlines

Cureus, 2021

The causes of osteoporosis in Crohn's disease (CD) are multifactorial; cytokines, steroids, and v... more The causes of osteoporosis in Crohn's disease (CD) are multifactorial; cytokines, steroids, and vitamin deficiency all have an essential role. It is imperative to distinguish the factors that contribute to bone resorption, potentially increasing the risk of low bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis, and fracture. However, the pathogenicity of osteoporosis associated with CD remains unclear. Although osteoporosis treatment may vary between bisphosphonate and corticosteroid, infliximab's efficacy, when combined with immune modulators, suppresses both CD symptoms and osteoporosis progression. In this review, we aim to understand the present pathogenicity of osteoporosis, including the factors pro-inflammatory cytokines, chronic steroid use, and malnutrition, developing osteoporosis in a different pathological way, and to assist the treatment lines implying a positive outcome of osteoporosis in CD patients. Osteoporosis is considered to be one of the early complications of CD where early detection can prevent osteoporosis progression. This can be done by utilizing dual-energy X-ray-absorptiometry (DEXA) to evaluate the Z-score and treat the existing factors that have a role in the progression of osteoporosis in CD patients.

Research paper thumbnail of Legal and Geopolitical Aspects of Energy Development in the Eastern Mediterranean and the EU’s Strategic Involvement

The New Eastern Mediterranean Transformed, 2021

The discovery of significant oil and gas deposits in the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of Israel... more The discovery of significant oil and gas deposits in the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of Israel, Egypt, and Cyprus, and the alleged deposits in Greece, could potentially provide the European Union with an additional energy source that will contribute to the diversification, security, and resilience of Europe's energy supplies. Yet energy developments in the region have raised a number of legal and geopolitical challenges, mirroring the antagonistic and often turbulent relations amongst states in the region. This chapter provides an overview of the hydrocarbon discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean with the aim to explore the conditions under which countries have shaped their energy policies in the broader context of their national strategies and account for the EU's strategic involvement in the region. The analysis highlights the legal, geopolitical as well as security concerns preoccupying stakeholders in the region and examines the prospects and limitations of the Eastern Mediterranean energy resources reaching Europe.

OIT offers degree programs in engineering, management, communications, health technology, and applied science. OIT's Computer Systems Engineering Technology [CSET] Department uses a sequence of three quarter-length senior project classes to meet ABET-TAC capstone design requirements. Due to a lack of student preparation for this senior project class sequence, an additional set of three quarter-length prerequisite classes, junior project, was added. Both of these classes feature complex programmable digital logic circuit designs based on current VLSI technology. The junior project class is based on team projects and the success or failure of the students is influenced by both the quality of the faculty proctor's direction and the excellence of the social dynamics of the students' teamwork. This paper presents a paradigm for a conflict resolution scheme based on allowing the team members to fire a non-performing colleague in certain circumstances.

Research paper thumbnail of Analysis of Decision Support System in Determining the Nutritional Status of Toddlers Using Simple Additive Weighting

CommIT (Communication and Information Technology) Journal, 2020

The problem that currently happens in the decision process of the nutritional status for toddlers... more The problem that currently happens in the decision process of the nutritional status for toddlers is often based on manual calculation. However, the manual calculation is prone to data duplication, insufficient data, and a lack of availability of the data itself, which can hinder the monitoring status and the report. Therefore, to ease the determination and calculation process of the nutritional status of toddlers, the researchers conduct a study using the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method. The SAW method is selected because it defines the best alternative and some other alternatives based on specified or preferred criteria. This research is conducted by finding the weight value of each attribute and rating the data to determine the nutritional status of toddlers. For the result, the researchers find there are no toddlers with malnutrition in Pemberdayaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga, Program Kerja Kelompok Kerja IV (PKK POKJA IV) of Depok.

Despite this, an information gap between developed and resource-limited countries remains, and there is scant research on actual information needs of workers themselves. The Republic of Botswana represents a fertile ground to address existing gaps in research, policy, and practice, due to its demonstrated gap in access to information and specialists among rural health care workers (HCWs), burgeoning mHealth capacity, and a timely offer from Orange Telecommunications to access Wikipedia for free on mobile platforms for Botswana subscribers. In this study, we sought to identify clinical information needs of HCWs of Botswana and their perception of Wikipedia as a clinical tool. Twenty-eight facilitated focus groups, consisting of 113 HCWs of various cadres based at district hospitals, ...
