After arthroscopic surgery, 91.6% of all patients had good or excellent motion; 91.3% had good or excellent pain reduction; 90.6% had good or excellent ability to maintain a normal diet; and 92% had a good or excellent reduction in disability. These health outcomes compare favorably with all other known treatments for these conditions. Also, the surgical technique was relatively free of complications (4.4%). In September 1988, the Special Committee on Temporomandibular Joint Arthroscopy of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons identified the need to conduct a retrospective multicenter study of data on the results of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopic surgical procedures. Factors such as age, gender, and nature and duration of preoperative and postoperative symptoms would be evaluated for correlation with these results. This article reports the findings from this study. Materials and Methods The Special Committee designed a survey questionnaire that included demographic data, diagnostic cri

One excellent example of this is found off the northwestern coast of Baja California, M exico. Despite the wealth of data from islands to the north and south, the Coronados Islands, a group of four small islands clearly visible and only a short boat ride from the mainland, have seen little scientific archaeological investigation. As part of a collaborative bi-national research project, the first systematic archaeological reconnaissance of the Coronados Islands was completed in October 2016, resulting in the identification of 30 archaeological sites, the collection of diagnostic surface artifacts, and the radiocarbon dating of two prehistoric sites. We detail our efforts to build an island settlement chronology and

The fishery is of concern because of high harvest levels and potential indirect impacts of sheephead removals on the structure and function of kelp forest ecosystems. California sheephead are proto-gynous hermaphrodites that, as predators of sea urchins and other invertebrates, are critical components of kelp forest ecosystems in the northeast Pacific. Overfishing can trigger trophic cascades and widespread ecological dysfunction when other urchin predators are also lost from the system. Little is known about the ecology and abundance of sheephead before commercial exploitation. Lack of a historical perspective creates a gap for evaluating fisheries management measures and marine reserves that seek to rebuild sheephead populations to historical baseline conditions. We use population abundance and size structure data from the zooarchaeological reco...
