As state legislators attempt to erase TGD people from existence, systemic therapists can and should be at the forefront of advancing TGD-inclusive therapy practices. In the spirit of such advancement, we present a socioculturally attuned approach to working with TGD individuals and families. Like TGD-inclusive therapy, socioculturally attuned therapy requires systemic therapists to recognize how systemic oppression constrains TGD individuals and families. This approach differs in that it calls for third-order change, or systems changing systems, moving beyond helping families restructure the rules and relational dynamics to becoming agents of change within the systems they operate. We posit that TGD-inclusive therapy practices and socioculturally attuned practice can mutually inform one another to create a more inclusive practice.

One popular strategy is the use of crowdfunding through GoFundMe (GFM). Recently, scholars have examined the mechanisms behind a “successful “ campaign. However, few scholars explore how these narratives are constructed. Using narrative inquiry, we examined the narrative structure of 83 GFM requests with the aim of understanding how people construct those seeking financial assistance for mental health as people of moral worth. Our results reveal that narratives are typically structured through the hero/heroine's story arch, often focusing on how the person has much to offer to society, is ready for change through whatever means necessary, and is only seeking requests after exhausting all other options. Such constructions may inadvertently further perpetuate stigma toward mental health needs and those who ex...

Gender socialization influences children at early ages, shaping their developing identities. The ... more Gender socialization influences children at early ages, shaping their developing identities. The toys provided by parents deliver some of the earliest gender-based messages by encouraging children to engage in activities associated with, for example, dolls and trucks. In the current study, we measured the influence of parental socialization by assessing 5-and 12 ½-month-old infants' exposure to dolls and trucks and by experimentally manipulating parents' encouragement to play with these toys. We found that infants displayed gender-typical toy preferences at 12 ½, but not 5 months, a pattern characteristic of previous studies. However, brief encouragement by a parent to play with toys from each category was ineffective in altering infants' preferences. Rather, the types of toys present in the home predicted preferences, suggesting that at-home exposure to toys may be influential in the development of toy preferences. These findings reveal that socialization processes may indeed play a role in the formation of early gender-typical toy preferences and highlight the importance of equal toy exposure during infancy to ensure optimal development.

In this paper, we situate queer theory's original integration into the field using Oswald, Blume, and Marks' essay on decentering heteronormativity. We offer critiques and challenges to extend beyond the current conceptualization and provide a promise of queer theory in family science that envisions new queer possibilities to emerge. We contend that the queer promise must extend beyond mere LGBT studies and invite family scholars to consider how queer theory can be used to deconstruct and resist a normative frame of family. Specifically, we encourage scholars to examine the utopian demand of reproductive futurity, queer temporalities, and a needed analysis of homonormativity. We conclude with a discussion of barriers to such a queer promise.

Ethical and conceptual issues of cross-disciplinary collaboration are presented. Issues of social inequity and social determinants of health are highlighted to show the need for critical theory and knowledge of economic injustice in order to do cross disciplinary collaboration. Two models: one for cross disciplinary skills implementation and one for professional collaboration are presented. The paper closes with five recommendations for integrating financial therapy and systems theory. Keywords Financial therapy • Social justice • Critical theory • Social determinants of health • Cross disciplinary • Systems theory • Cautions and benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration In the average U.S. metropolitan area, homes in neighborhoods where the share of the population is 50 percent black are valued at roughly half the price as homes in neighborhoods with no black residents The undervaluation of housing in black neighborhoods has important social implications. Black homeowners realize lower wealth accumulation, which makes it more difficult to start and invest in businesses and afford college tuition. We believe anti-black bias is the reason this undervaluation happens, and we hope to better understand the precise beliefs and behaviors that drive this process in future research. (Perry et al. 2018; Brookings Report) Seniors were sold a risk-free retirement with reverse mortgages. Now they face for reclosure. Urban African American neighborhoods are hardest hit as nearly 100,000 loans have failed (USA headline, June 12, 2019)

Recently, there has been a shift in the discourse regarding sex work as the sex industry has been openly represented within art, fashion, and film. As such, there has been a growing number of qualitative studies dedicated to investigating cisgender men’s experiences of the sex industry. This article seeks to identify and synthesize these emergent findings to identify possible gaps in the literature, aid in defining new research opportunities, and guide public health policy development. Using qualitative meta-synthesis, 66 original studies were identified and analyzed. Nine meta-themes emerged. Findings demonstrated that male sex workers (MSWs) encounter many of the same experiences that have been previously documented by female sex workers, such as work-related discrimination and the influence of economics on their interest and involvement i...

Parents, for example, offer children toys and other objects that are gender-specific; trucks for boys and dolls for girls. Researchers have recognized the need to focus on gender development in infancy and toddlerhood. Although this research has been mixed, studies have revealed some gender-typed toy preferences. These preferences have been primarily attributed to biological factors. In the current study, parents' encouragement and previous exposure to certain toys and infants' and toddlers' baseline and posttest toy preferences were assessed. Results indicated that parents' encouragement and previous exposure were ineffective in shaping infants' and toddlers' toy preferences. Fourmonth-olds did not show a preference, while twelve-month-old male toddlers preferred the trucks. These results are consistent with previous research. Implications of the current study and future research are discussed.

Not having them presents a barrier for bilingual therapists and their clients. This paper reviews common translation methods and introduces a multi-level, community-based approach for translating clinic materials for non-English speaking clients. Informed by decolonizing practices, this five-tier method includes members from the target community as cultural brokers to verify the accuracy and nuances of language for their cultural group, as well as a constant comparative method to ensure methodological rigor in the process of inclusion. We present community member's feedback and recommendations, as well as discuss advantages and challenges of using this collaborative culturally responsive translation method.
