Abstract:

Many people point to the events of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries as having resulted in the Kashmir Crisis. My research endeavors to question the validity of these arguments, since each of the events, though important and formative of their own right, cannot, of themselves, take full credit for the religious, social, and political upheaval raging in Kashmir since the Partition of India. Even the Partition of 1947, I argue, should not be seen as the single great catalyst for conflict in Kashmir – the roots of the conflict are much more complicated than a single event. In my paper, I argue that the Kashmir Crisis is directly contingent on the outgrowth of Pan-Islamic Modernism, which combined with the Anglo-Indian political atmosphere of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. This combination of ideology and politics ultimately heightened the tension between Pakistan and India at the first signs of partition, and it, therefore, played a vital role in the beginning and development of the Kashmir Crisis.

Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to uncover the events, pressures, and developments that surrounded Russian Feminism around the turn of the Nineteenth Century. The findings are intended to show how feminist ideals played a crucial role in wartime politics during World War I and ultimately culminated in the Russian Revolution. By looking closely at events such as the Emancipation of Serfs and the Revolution of 1905, we see how Russian feminism was both fueled and neglected. World War I interrupted the mounting of social tensions and Russian Feminism became a war propaganda tool on both sides. Examining female sources during the war helps to identify two separate feminist movements, namely Bourgeois Feminism and Bolshevik Feminism, whose platforms closely mirrored and supported the Menshevik and Bolshevik political platforms respectively. Through this research, it is clear that the February and October Revolutions of 1917 were greatly influenced by the social and political implications of Russian Feminism, and that the competing factions of Russian Feminism contributed to the rise of Bolshevism in Russian politics.
