The difference between the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) position statemen... more The difference between the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) position statement and the two others mentioned is that if a registered nurse (RN) is educated and supported by an institution, ASPMN's position is that the RN may manage analgesia by catheter. Management includes ''reinjection of medication (bolus dose) after establishment of an appropriate therapeutic range and adjustment of drug infusion rate in compliance with a licensed independent practitioner order.'' The AWHONN position statement does not permit for RNs rebolus injection, initiation of a continuous infusion, or increasing or decreasing the rate of the continuous infusion. As president of ASPMN, Nancy Eksterowicz was receiving calls asking why there

A survey was sent to nurses involved in pain management. The role-delineation survey consisted of 92 activity statements and was based on the Nursing Intervention Classifications. Frequency of performing each activity and importance of the activity were rated by respondents, and a Mean Activity Index score was calculated for each item. As part of the sampling strategy, a random sample of 200 nurse members of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON) were sent surveys. Forty-two (21%) NAON members returned completed surveys. The activities with the highest Mean Activity Index were primarily those involving pain assessment and pharmacologic management and those relatively specific to orthopaedic patients, such as positioning to increase comfort and premedicating with analgesics before activity. Orthopaedic nurses were similar to other nursing specialty groups for assessment and pharmacologic management of pain but placed more emphasis on activity management than other groups. The results of the study will be used to refine standards of care develop nursing education curricula, develop research priorities, and develop a blueprint for a certification examination.

Anxiety can decrease performance ability and, consequently, increase the risk for patient harm. Strategies to decrease this anxiety related to clinical experiences are limited within the nursing education literature. Faculty in a 4-year baccalaureate nursing program developed and implemented formative capstone simulation scenarios with standardized patients, integrating therapeutic communication, essential patient care skills, and clinical reasoning for novice nursing students prior to their entry into their first clinical practicum. This article discusses the rationale, development, and implementation of these formative capstone simulation scenarios. Anecdotal student and faculty comments related to the formative capstone simulation scenarios were positive. Formative capstone simulation scenarios offer a method to prepare novice students for initial clinical practicum that is well received....
