Most of the proposals are implemented in simulation, with reduced practical significance for system operators. This work proposes a web-based simple algorithm to identify the dynamic parameters of a reduced-order model of power system frequency dynamics that is implemented with industrial hardware on a PMU network in the Chilean power system. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed tool, the algorithm is implemented in a web page with real-time monitoring of the frequency of the Chilean power system, so that utilities and academic institutions with access to PMU measurements can apply the proposed concepts regardless of the topology of the monitored system.

Given this scenario, this work’s central purpose was to conduct a synchronous analysis of the concept of governance and the constitution of university governments. As for methodology, we used secondary sources: a review of papers published mainly in English-language journals. The study focuses on the sixties and seventies and addresses the roots of the concept of university governance, delineating the actors in university governments, and the power relations between them. Among the key findings, it can be highlighted that the academic stratum, since the start of universities, has played an almost plenipotentiary role in university governments and, as a result, in the course of university development, and, as organizational ...

The interactive genetic algorithm combines a set of computable user interface design metrics with subjective user input to guide the evolution of interfaces. Our goal is to provide user interface designers with a tool that can be used to explore innovation and creativity in the design space of user interfaces and make it easier for end-users to further customize their user interface without programming knowledge. User interface specifications are encoded as individuals in an interactive genetic algorithm's population and their fitness is computed from a weighted combination of user interface design guidelines and user input. This paper shows that we can reduce human fatigue in interactive genetic algorithms (the number of choices needing to be made by the designer), by 1) only asking the user to pick two user interfaces from among ten shown on the display and 2) by asking the user to make the choice once every t generations.

User interface design is both art and science in that we use both objective and subjective design metrics to evaluate interfaces. An automated process that relies on both subjective and objective metrics to guide the evolution of effective, personalized user interfaces could significantly change current GUI development and maintenance practice. This paper uses an interactive genetic algorithm to evolve XUL user interface layouts by combining objective and subjective metrics. The genetic algorithm encodes expert knowledge from prominent usability guidelines as objective heuristics. Further, the graphical user interface developer (or user!) biases and guides the evolution of the interfaces by subjectively evaluating and selecting the "best" and "worst" interfaces from a small set of displayed interface prototypes. We explore how the selection of individuals from the population to be displayed to the user for subjective evaluation affects the convergence of the genetic algorithm and show that our methodology can produce effective interfaces that reflect subjective user-preferred aesthetics.

My model enhances creativity in the conceptual design phase by allowing designers to guide genetic algorithms in order to breed new design ideas quickly, and by supporting team collaboration through the sharing of solutions among designers. Finally, I attack the problem of user fatigue in using an interactive genetic algorithm to evolve design solutions. First, I present a computational model of creative design based on collaborative interactive genetic algorithms. I test my model on the problems of floorplanning and the generation of transformations for 3D models. I support collaboration by allowing individual designers to view each others’ designs during the evolutionary process and to share designs via case injection. Collaboration causes changes in the design space, introducing the potential to generate creative solutions. Results show that solutions generated with collaborative interactive genetic algorithms are more creative than solutions generated without collaboration. Second, an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) which requires the user to provide a large number of user evaluations for many generations can lead to user fatigue. Reducing user fatigue is a critical challenge in my research since my computational model relies on IGAs. Fitness interpolation allows for the fitness values of individuals in an IGA to be estimated from a representative set of individuals. Such a technique effectively reduces the number of evaluations needed from a user, since the user is only required to evaluate the representative set of individuals. I present a fitness interpolation technique consisting of picking the solution the user likes best, and estimating the fitness of every other individual in the population based on similarity to the user selected best. In addition, the user is asked to make the choice once every t generations. I apply my technique to the well understood Onemax problem allowing us to empirically compare the performance of my proposed technique against a standard IGA. Results show that I can reduce the number of user evaluations performed by a user by an order of magnitude compared to a standard IGA. By using my fitness interpolation technique a user can effectively bias the IGA search towards solutions of interest.

Despite these advances, these machines continue underutilized in network environments due to operating system limitations regarding the management of these devices. These limitations force the use of these devices via other network hardware, such as a server, that manage the device access and data. While effective, this results in increased resource consumption and ignores the capabilities presented by network-attached devices. In order to facilitate optimal utilization of these devices, we have designed a new, extensible management architecture for all network-attached devices. This architecture, presented here, supports the central management of network-attached devices while allowing client machines access to the device without intermediate server hardware. Implementation of this paradigm on test networks has decreased resource consumption-especially bandwidth-considerably.

The hypothesis is that creative designs can be produced if the design search space can be continuously expanded not just by modifying the values of variables but also by adding new ones. The framework presented herein transforms well-formed 3D models by evolving vertex programs, and allows designers to collaborate with peers by injecting solutions from their peers into their own populations. 3D models were created individually and collaboratively, and an evaluation of the individually versus collaboratively evolved 3D models showed that the majority of the evaluation participants rated the collaboratively evolved models as more creative.
