Using a naturalistic, qualitative methodology we investigate the actions two high school English language arts teachers engage in to meet the needs of their students. Findings suggest that embracing the students’ resources, building on linguistic knowledge, taking time to choose the right books and activities, being explicit about writer’s workshop and accepting its frenetic pace because it meets the students’ needs, and using the act of writing as a thinking activity, were the actions that made a difference to promote student success.

Analysis of the recA and atpD genes showed that the strains isolated belong to a cluster containing the strains Bradyrhizobium ottawaense OO99 T , 'Bradyrhizobium americanum' CMVU44 and Bradyrhizobium daqingense CCBAU 15774 T , and presented similarity values lower than 96 % for both genes with respect to the strains nodulating C. cajan. DNA-DNA hybridization analysis showed averages of 36, 40 and 39 % relatedness with respect to the representative strains of Bradyrhizobium ottawaense, 'Bradyrhizobium americanum' and Bradyrhizobium daqingense, respectively. Phenotypic characteristics also differed from those of the most closely related species of the genus Bradyrhizobium. Therefore, based on the data obtained in this study, we propose to classify the strains AMBPC1010 T (=LMG 29967 T =CECT 9227 T) and AMBPC1011 into a novel species named Bradyrhizobium cajani sp. nov.

Furthermore, zebrafish offer advantages over other model species. Seeing as fewer and fewer students are entering science degree programs, this project has been developed to encourage scientific vocations among secondary school students. To do so, an aquarium was given to 114 schools so that they could look after adult zebrafish, mate them, and visualize embryo development. For training on more sophisticated techniques, a virtual tool was developed to simulate a real genetics laboratory on a personal computer. Results based on teachers' feedback indicate that the students were fully dedicated to the project and achieved better understanding of genetic concepts and techniques. These results demonstrate the potential of alternative teaching methods for engaging students in science learning.

For this case study, the authors use interactive read-alouds and writing samples to document the reading and writing events of this yearlong tutorial experience. They report on the power of critical literacy to engage a developing reader and improve her comprehension. These findings suggest that taking a critical literacy lens encourages struggling readers to use their strongest assets—the power of listening and speaking. This research also provides insights for teachers in helping students of all ages experience success as they attempt to improve their reading skills.

In fact, several studies have reported that physicians tend to have more cardiovascular risk factors than their patients. The present cross-sectional study assessed whether the Health Sciences students had a healthier lifestyle, thus could have a more preventive attitude towards chronic diseases than the general population. Materials and methods: Students of the medical-biological areas were surveyed by answering a questionnaire about familiar cardiovascular risk factors, personal smoking, alcohol drinking, dietary and exercise habits. Blood pressure was also measured, along with weight, height, and abdominal circumference. Results: 23.4% of the participants were overweight and 10% obese. Parental obesity was the most frequent risk factor, followed by social drinking and smoking. We found high consumption of animal derived foods, breakfast-like ce...

In this work we isolated several slow-growing rhizobial strains nodulating C. cajan that were found to be closely related to Bradyrhizobium yuanmingense according to the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences. These strains were genetically diverse on the basis of their RAPD patterns and showed high variability in nodulation ability and N-fixation on hydroponic conditions. Highly effective strains used as biofertilizers in four different soils from Dominican Republic showed that biofertilization of C. cajan with these strains produced the same or even higher yield than the mineral nitrogen fertilization. Therefore, biofertilization with native Bradyrhizobium strains can be adopted instead of chemical fertilization to improve both the yield and the quality of C. cajan. This is the first report about the nodulation of this legume by strains close to B. yuanmingense in Dominican Republic where the natural nodulation of C. cajan is scarce and then, the biofertilization can be crucial to increase the yield of this horticultural crop very important for human feeding.

The deepwater region east of the Mexican state Tamaulipas remains virtually unexplored despite it... more The deepwater region east of the Mexican state Tamaulipas remains virtually unexplored despite its close proximity to prolific oil production in the USA portion of the Gulf of Mexico. To locate new reserves, PEMEX launched an initiative to outline a deepwater exploratory strategy, assess risk and classify hydrocarbon type by area. A comprehensive geological modeling study was funded to analyze Upper Jurassic and Tertiary strata with 2D/3D seismic, well logs and to map naturally occurring gas seeps and oil shows. The project enabled geologists to accurately identify several key play elements including reservoir presence/quality in addition to hydrocarbon source rocks, migration patterns and trapping mechanisms. The study characterized the area's sedimentary environments and complex structural features including growth faults and downthrown rollover folds that created multiple anticlinal features in addition to typical gulf coast salt/shale diapirs. The study concluded the offshor...
