Aim: to determine the knowledge level of patients with dental trauma. Materials and methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the population of Pueblo Nuevo Health Area, Teaching Policlinic "Carlos Verdugo", in the period from 2009 to 2014. Results: male sex was the most affected one (65.1 %), and the frequency of trauma in permanent teeth was higher than in deciduous ones. School and dentist were the main information sources on the theme (7 % in both cases). The predominant knowledge level was low (83.7 %). Population considers that waiting several days could be the behavioural criteria in the case of dental trauma. Conclusions: male sex was the predominant one; dental trauma was more frequent in 4-11 years age. The re...

When there is retention of them, it is important to lead them into the dental arc through orthodontic treatment due to functional and esthetic reasons. Aim: describing the behavior of retained canines in the municipality of Colon, province of Matanzas. Materials and methods: the universe of work was formed by 40 patients receiving attention in the multidisciplinary consultation (OrthodonticsMaxillofacial) of the Stomatologic Clinic “27 de Noviembre”, who were surgically treated in the Maxillofacial Service of the Territorial Teaching Hospital “Dr Mario Muñoz” of Colon, Matanzas, in the period between January 2013 and December 2014, with a diagnosis of retained canine. Outcomes: the predominating age was 14 years old in 11 patients, for 27.5 % of the sample; there were not differences in gender and skin color. European people were the most represented ones, with 36 patients, for 90 %. The most affected ...

The three most important pairs of salivary glands are: the parotid ones, located below the ear; the submaxillary ones, located on the lower mandible; and the sublingual ones, located under the tongue. There are several little size others spread out over all the oral cavity, lips, tongue, etc., associated to the conjunctive tissue to capture the nutrients the blood vessels need; they also have connections with the proper nervous system. Xerostomia or the dry mouth syndrome is defined as the decrease of the salivary flow in resting conditions. The origin of this clinical entity is multicausal, and may be the result of an alteration located on the glands producing saliva or the result of a systemic unbalance or modification. Evaluating the dysfunction level of the salivary glands has being a main objective for the science. It is essential to work out a clinical history together with a patient personal interview, a clinical examination for the disease diagnosis and evaluation and, among the complementary tests, the quantitative and qualitative ones. For the treatment, primary prevention, reviewing the pharmacologic treatments, saliva stimulation, and also saliva substitutes or artificial saliva have to be taken into account.

This paper aims at reflecting on how the transformations in Cuban society might lead to conceptual changes in the analysis of the health situation. The need for more innovative models and methodologies applied to the Cuban context are discussed. The trends regarding social determinants will allow developing proper oral health intervention strategies in our context. Future epidemiological studies should pay special attention to social issues such as household income, family dynamics, gender equality, respect for diversity, employment, working conditions, social support networks and food security or proper diet.
