The simulator compares the prices of the energy traders and indicates to consumers the best option to contract energy. To make the comparison, the simulator uses trader's data (energy prices) and the consumer's data (energy bill, threephase or single-phase power supply and equipment's), to estimate its consumption and finally determine which trader will be the best choice.

Research paper thumbnail of Screen-printed electrode produced by printed-circuit board technology. Application to cancer biomarker detection by means of plastic antibody as sensing material

This low cost and disposable device was tested for screening a cancer biomarker in point-of-care. The selected biomarker was carcinogenic embryonic antigen (CEA) protein, routinely used to follow-up the progression of specific cancer diseases. The biosensor was constructed by assembling a plastic antibody on the Ag-working electrode area, acting as the biorecognition element of the device. The protein molecules that were entrapped on the polymer and positioned at the outer surface of the polypyrrole (PPy) film were removed by protease action. The imprinting effect was tested by preparing non-imprinted (NPPy) material, including only PPy as biorecognition element. Infrared and Raman studies confirmed the surface modification of these electrodes. The ability of the sensing material to rebind CEA was measured by several electrochemical techniques: cyclic voltammetry (CV), impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The linear response ranged from 0.05 to 1.25 pg/mL against logarithm concentration. Overall, producing screen-printed electrodes by means of conventional PCB technology showed promising features, mostly regarding cost and prompt availability. The plastic antibody-based biosensor also seems to be a promising tool for screening CEA in point-of-care, with low response time, low cost, good sensitivity and high stability.

Research paper thumbnail of Distributed energy resources management with cyber-physical SCADA in the context of future smart grids

Melecon 2010 - 2010 15th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference, 2010

This paper proposes an innovative methodology for distributed energy resources management. The optimal operation of distributed generation, demand response and storage resources is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming model (MILP) and solved by a deterministic optimization technique CPLEX-based implemented in General Algebraic Modeling Systems (GAMS). The paper deals with a vision for the grids of the future, focusing on conceptual and operational aspects of electrical grids characterized by an intensive penetration of DG, in the scope of competitive environments and using artificial intelligence methodologies to attain the envisaged goals. These concepts are implemented in a computational framework which includes both grid and market simulation. I.

We describe the work progresses of a capsule-Cap4Uwith the size and shape of a common pill and containing a minute camera. The Cap4U is within the novel embedding Wireless Power Transfer System (WPTS). This technology allows the transmission of electrical energy from an external power source, such as the electrical power grid or a consuming device, without the use of electrical conductor wires. Several techniques architecture used to implements the present novel endoscopy system are explained. The specific requirements of image acquisition in one hand and the limitations in the size of the Cap4U in the otherhand, as well as, the energy restriction and the electromagnetic interferences were considered in the present work in all the technical options carried out. Keywords Capsule endoscopy. Wireless power transmission. Technology. Energy induction Wireless capsule endoscopy is a rapidly emerging technology used for diagnosis of diseases within the gastrointestinal tract. Many wireless capsules found in the literature suffer from limited battery life. These capsules provide limited operation time, as well as, low image rate which affects the clarity of the images taken from the device [1-3]. The Cap4U aims to deploy one approach to the endoscopy that mitigates these compliances. The Cap4U is designed with the small dimensions as similar as the other capsules designs. The presented capsule is battery less that it uses one Wireless Power Transfer System (WPTS). The resonant coils of wire copper were inserted into the capsule to capture the energy in the electromagnetic field.

This article presents and compares methods that allow determining how much and who must pay for the use of the electrical transmission network. This issue is analysed, under the point of view of several transmission system users: generators, loads and transactions being analysed. The advantages and disadvantages of each method, from the point of view of the considered users are discussed. The embedded methods are used as the base of costs calculation, specifically the methods Postage-Stamp and MW-mile and some of its variants. This study is illustrated using a simple nine-bus electrical network that being used by R&D groups for several projects concerning power markets.

That means up to 40 kW and blades with fixed pitch angle. This algorithm allows the development of controllers to fetch the wind generators at the desired operational point in variable operating conditions. The problems posed by the variable wind intensity are solved using the proposed algorithm. This is done with no explicit measure of the wind velocity, and so no special equipment or anemometer is required to compute or measure the wind velocity.

This paper presents a software tool that evaluates the nodal marginal prices considering losses and congestion. The initial dispatch is based on all the electricity transactions negotiated in the pool and in bilateral contracts. It must be checked if the proposed initial dispatch leads to congestion problems; if a congestion situation is detected, it must be solved. An AC power flow is used to verify if there are congestion situations in the initial dispatch. Whenever congestion situations are detected, they are solved and a feasible dispatch (re-dispatch) is obtained. After solving the congestion problems, the simulator evaluates LMP. The paper presents a case study based on the the 118 IEEE bus test network.
