Judith R . Amesbury - Academia.edu (original) (raw)

I am an archaeologist with a specialty in Faunal Remains and Marine Resource Use. I majored in Anthropology at the University of Arizona (UA) and graduated in 1962. I went to work for Dr. T. Patrick Culbert, the ceramicist for the Tikal Project in Guatemala. I also worked on the excavation of the Spanish Mission San Xavier del Bac near Tucson under the direction of Dr. Bernard "Bunny" Fontana. I went on to graduate school at UA and worked as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant. I attended the Archaeological Field School at Grasshopper, Arizona under the direction of Dr. William Longacre in 1967. In 1968 I worked at the Neanderthal cave site of Tabun in Israel under the direction of Dr. Arthur Jelinek and the Israeli archaeologist Dr. Avraham Ronen. I moved to Hawaii in 1969 and worked for the Bishop Musuem (1969-70) under Dr. Yosihiko Sinoto. While at the Bishop Museum, I worked on the Big Island at Anaeho'omalu Bay under Mr. William Barrera. At that time, there were many petroglyphs there and also lava bubble caves with beautiful Hawaiian artifacts and even canoe burials. Now the Waikaloa Resort is there, and very few of the previous petroglyphs or bubble caves remain. I also worked on the original Moanalua-Halawa survey under Dr. William Ayres. A co-worker on that survey was Mr. Herb Jennings, the son of the archaeologist Dr. Jesse Jennings. In Moanalua Valley we saw a giant boulder covered with Hawaiian petroglyphs. In 1970-71, I worked for the Hawaii Register of Historic Places under Dr. T. Stell Newman. With Dr. Newman, I did underwater archaeology on the North Shore of Oahu. With my co-worker Ms. Jean Martin, I hiked up and down the west coast of the Big Island more than once. In 1974, I moved to Guam. From 1984-1986, Ms. Darlene Moore and I worked as independent contractors for Dr. Michael McNerney at the Spanish site of Fort Soledad in Umatac, Guam, and for Micronesian Area Research Center (MARC) at University of Guam under Dr. Michael Graves. From 1986 through 1991, I worked at Micronesian Area Research Services (MARS), which at that time was a sole proprietorship owned by Ms. Moore. On January 2, 1992, MARS became a non-profit corporation. I was one of the four Founders and Directors. I served as a Director and the Treasurer of MARS for 30 years (1992-2022). Over the years, I obtained grants from NOAA Fisheries, Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council (WPRFMC), Pelagic Fisheries Research Program at University of Hawaii, Guam Humanities Council, Guam Preservation Trust, Guam Visitors Bureau, Guam Fishermen's Co-op and others. I spent a year and a half (2012-2014) studying with Dr. Katherine Szabo at the University of Wollongong in Australia. I attended scientific meetings and gave presentations in Guam, Saipan, Hawaii, Washington, D.C., Palau, the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Australia. I have visited archaeological sites and museums in many other countries, including the site of Persepolis in Iran in 1968, the site of Stonehenge near Amesbury, England in 1997, the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xi'an, China in 2001, and many of the Mayan sites in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize in 2010. I served on committees of WPRFMC in Honolulu, Hawaii, for 25 years (1997-2023) under the directorship of Ms. Kitty Simonds. I was on the Social Science Committee (1997-2022) and the Scientific and Statistical Committee (2007-2017). I was most recently the head of the Guam Advisory Panel (2022-2023). Two films that I made about fishing are on YouTube. They are "Traditional Fishing on Guam" and "Open Ocean Fishing in the Mariana Archipelago". In 2024, my work concerning fishing and mollusk harvesting was part of a show at the Guam Museum. I had earlier shown my films at the museum and participated in presentations and displays there. In addition to the booklets, "Traditional Fishing on Guam" and "Who Wears the Beads?" about shell jewelry from a site on Guam, I am the author of two booklets for the U.S. military, including "Archaeology on the Northern Plateau of Guam". In 2017 I received a Resolution from WPRFMC for my service on the Scientific and Statistical Committee. In 2021 I received a Resolution from the Guam Legislature for my years of archeological work on Guam. In 2024 I was given the Ancient Order of Chamorri award by Governor Lou Leon Guerrero of Guam. I am now semi-retired, and I have moved to Tempe, Arizona. I continue to write and publish. I am currently writing additional articles for Guampedia, an online encyclopedia, and for Micronesica, the scientific journal of the University of Guam. I am awaiting publication of a book chapter prepared for Dr. Scott Fitzpatrick at the University of Oregon. The book will be titled 'Ancient Micronesian Worlds' and published by University of Cambridge, England. I am also working with co-author Angelina Pangelinan, to complete a book that will facilitate the identification of shells from archaeological sites on Guam.
