Research that has focused on women's experiences has centred on concern around young women's anal sex practices, with little exploration of why people participate in anal sex and neglect of its relational and pleasure-based dimensions. The present study sought to explore these concerns via data gathered using focus groups and individual interviews with a range of individuals including sexual health practitioners and young people. Data were thematically coded, with results centred on three themes: anal sex as deviance, anal sex as phallocentric, and anal sex as agentic. Results suggest a pattern of perceptions and narratives that has potential to undermine honest education, advice-giving and safer sex if they are not addressed and questioned in safe spaces, prior to work with young people. The im...

The research suggests that LGBTQ+ young people experience oppression at two levels, in the content of sex and relationships education, which reproduces gender as binary and sexuality as primarily heterosexual and reproductive, and at the level of institutionalised heteronormativity, and homophobic and transphobic bullying and victimisation. Despite these restrictions, LGBTQ+ young people often develop critical knowledge that allows them to challenge heteronormativity and gender binarism, particularly when supported by other sources such as inclusive and holistic youth groups, peers and media. This leads us to argue that a critical pedagogies approach would enter into dialogue with young people’s critical capacities and knowledge in order to understand...

Arguably, theoretical debate and critique been more prominent than practitioner perspectives on how to persuade stakeholders of the value of implementing pleasure into learning about sexualities and relationships. This paper offers a rationale for positive SRE that includes pleasure. A series of theoretically and empirically supported suggestions are offered to encourage curriculum gatekeepers that SRE premised on a right to pleasure is warranted because of its potential to achieve safer sexual health outcomes and contribute to gender equality. Challenges faced by some sex educators are acknowledged by historicising the often uneasy associations between sexuality, education and youth in relation to some political and academic dimensions of debate, before offering a rationale on ways forward. Analysis focuses on young women. Policy developments relate to the UK but issues raised have relevance for SRE in other contexts.

Exploring strategies for the provision of effective sexualities and relationships education School-based sexualities and relationships education (SRE) offers one of the most promising means of improving young people's sexual health through developing 'sexual competence'. In the absence of evidence on whether the term holds the same meanings for young people and adults (e.g. teachers, researchers, policy makers), the paper explores 'adult' notions of sexual competence as construed in research data and alluded to in government guidance on SRE, then draws on empirical research with young people on factors which affect the contexts, motivations and outcomes of sexual encounters, and therefore have implications for sexual competence. These data from young people also challenge more traditional approaches to sexualities education in highlighting disjunctions between the content of school-based input and their reported sexual experience. The paper concludes by considering the implications of these insights for developing a shared notion of what SRE is trying to achieve and suggestions for recognition in the content and approaches to SRE.

We spoke to people in three generations: young parents currently aged under twenty, and those in their parents’ and grandparents’ generations who had also had children as teenagers. We set out to take a biographical perspective, inviting participants to reflect on the transitions that they made to parenthood, and on their experiences since then, including access to formal and informal support systems. The study was also intended to pilot a number of different research methods, with a view to considering their potential for facilitating participant involvement and gathering rich and indepth data. For this reason, the number of people involved was deliberately limited to a small sample. Our planned methods included biographical-narrative interviews, group discussion, photo-elicitation, and peer interviewing. In all, 14 men and 14 women ...

It aims to reveal the issues and processes that impact on young people's conceptions of self (both current and future) by looking at private and public realms of experience. In so doing, social lives, home lives and schooling (particularly sex education), are explored to reveal how far they operate in young people's interest. Lack of acknowledgement of young people's authentic lives in mainstream debates and practice forms a main focus of my critique. I adopt a qualitative methodology that is congruent with feminist principles for research, and am committed to exposing the knowledge creation process. Data are deployed from observations and interviews with 15 - 16 year old, African-Caribbean, Pakistani, Somali and white, secondary school students. A constructivist grounded theory approach was adopted to explore men’s transition to fatherhood. This paper reports on one of the sub-categories derived from the data. First-time fathers with a child under two were recruited predominantly via social media. Audio-recorded semi-structured interviews were undertaken with an opening question asking men to tell their story of becoming a father. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using constructivist grounded theory methods. This paper reports one core aspect of the research findings which has particular relevance for healthcare professionals. The men in this study were highly appreciative of the care their partner and baby received but consistently reported a lack of father-specific support throughout their journey to fatherhood. This ranged from generally poor communication with healthcare professionals to being ignored and side-lined in matern...

The evaluation was carried out during September 2014 to January 2015. Twenty nine young people aged 15-25 years who live in Sheffield or have used Sexual Health Sheffield’s services participated in the evaluation via interviews and focus groups. Experiences and utility of the services were contextualised in relation to geographic locality, social class, genders, sexualities, education/schooling and home/family circumstances. Community engagement services were widely regarded as excellent, with clear pointers to areas for further development in community and clinical settings.
