The authority of the ‘author’ is being questioned, and related to that is the role and purpose of the ‘publisher’ as arbiter of quality. The nature of education is changing as learners take a more active role in the process and help shape what is ‘taught’ and how the curriculum is delivered. Emerging technologies offer possibilities for multi sensory engagement with learning materials and methods. A space now exists in which multiple learners may interact with experienced educators through digital media in a trialogical relationship that encourages the creative construction of new learning content and shared understandings that possibly may challenge and/or alter existing ones. This chapter speculates on such a framework for learning. It draws on extensive experience in creative practice, inquiry through practice and related pedagogy. Although currently only a concept, it is clear how such a framework might be realised.

Visualizing Research guides postgraduate students in art and design through the development and i... more Visualizing Research guides postgraduate students in art and design through the development and implementation of a research project, using the metaphor of a 'journey of exploration'. For use with a formal programme of study, from masters to doctoral level, the book derives from the creative relationship between research, practice and teaching in art and design. It extends generic research processes into practice-based approaches more relevant to artists and designers, introducing wherever possible visual, interactive and collaborative methods. The Introduction and Chapter 1 'Planning the Journey' define the concept and value of 'practice-based' formal research, tracking the debate around its development and explaining key concepts and terminology. 'Mapping the Terrain' then describes methods of contextualizing research in art and design (the contextual review, using reference material); 'Locating Your Position' and 'Crossing the Terrain' guide the reader through the stages of identifying an appropriate research question and methodological approach, writing the proposal and managing research information. Methods of evaluation and analysis are explored, and finally strategies for reporting and communicating research findings are suggested. Appendices and a glossary are also included. Visualizing Research draws on the experience of researchers in different contexts and includes case studies of real projects. Although written primarily for postgraduate students, research supervisors, managers and academic staff in art and design and related areas, such as architecture and media studies, will find this a valuable research reference. An accompanying website www.visualizingresearch.info includes multimedia and other resources that complement the book.

Research paper thumbnail of Developing a Design Protocol for Computer Mediated collaboration during the concept stages with application to the Built Environment

Effective collaboration and maximum effort from stakeholders during the feasibility and concept d... more Effective collaboration and maximum effort from stakeholders during the feasibility and concept design stages in architecture provide the greatest potential for added value for the overall success of a building project, from the initial design through to construction and operation. What is more, design processes within different disciplines have been extensively mapped and they provide a valuable insight for managing the information between different conceptual stages. Based on that information, a predefined conceptual design protocol is established, tested and compared to the current paradigm of conceptual design. The aim of such a protocol is to enhance the conceptual design activities by guiding the multidisciplinary design team through the conceptual stage, highlight the importance of that stage and, eventually, provide the maximum information that will feed into later and more advanced design stages, aided by tangible user interfaces (TUIs) mediated collaboration. The initial results of the research are showcased and further research potentials are pointed out.

Developments in human-computer interactions' technologies allow the integration of physical and digital realms. Furthermore, advances in multi-touch displays promote the hap tic experience, which is substantial for externalising and communicating visual ideas among designers. As a result, an interactive surface is tested in two different studies with a multidisciplinary group of built environment professionals. The aim of the paper is to compare two different design applications, a commercial available one and a tailor-made one, to further analyse the effect of such an environment on the participants' perceptual, conceptual and collaborative actions and, eventually, to propose further research on augmented design platforms.

The report called for Higher Education Institutions to introduce 'progress files' which should consist of a transcript to record student achievement and a method where students could "…monitor, build and reflect upon the personal development." There have been a variety of responses to these directives ranging from the introduction of face to face taught modules integrated with existing courses to web- based PDP tools accessed through university intranets. The project set out to examine the various models of PDP systems and to review GraysNet1, a managed learning environment (MLE) developed at Gray's School of Art. The specific objectives of the research project were as follows: 1. To critically evaluate relevant research in assessment /profiling. 2. The paper describes research undertaken to establish a set of sustainable characteristics for product design. It describes in detail how the characteristics can be used as a tool to influence the design process. The paper goes on to describe how the characteristics have been incorporated into an educational tool for assisting product design students to assimilate the inherent contradictions they face when addressing sustainability. Two case studies are reported: the first is based on the author's own design practice, illustrating how the characteristics could be incorporated into the design process; the second study reports the outcome of the application of the characteristics as an educational tool when applied to a group of product design students.

This paper examines the various approaches which have been taken and in particular describes the work of The Centre for Design & Innovation (www.c4di.org.uk), Aberdeen, which has been established to provide innovation support for small to medium sized companies in Scotland. The centre has adopted a user-centered approach that encourages companies to consider their core values, identify opportunities based on their customers needs and encourage new thinking based on a reevaluation of the company's innovation culture. This paper examines the philosophical basis for the development of the new centre and subsequent methodology that has been adopted. It also describes a number of resources that have been developed to help SME's with their innovation processes. This is based on a user-centered, ethnographical strategy. Serious play is used...

It concentrates on the use of this media in practice-based Ph.D research in Art & Design, drawing on the experience gained at the Centre for Research in Art & Design, Gray's School of Art. The digital thesis is now a reality . The features of two examples of a digital thesis are described. The paper discusses the key considerations in developing such a document: benefits and limitations; general issues concerning planning, structure, and content; specific considerations for the design of the digital thesis, including navigation, required technology and support, different formats and development time. The paper concludes by speculating on issues for future developments.
