Children need specific notions of orientation in time and space. Maps are very useful for giving basic geographic coordinates. Historical maps can be used to make children and young people understand the interaction between the territory and time. The territory is known and modified by men, who leave memory of the process in historical cartography.

This will give variety to the exercises, and impress on the mind of the pupil in a more decided manner than by any other method, inany valuable particulars that, if inserted in the geography, would increase its dimensions much beyond its prescribed limits.
