Material and methods: Observational, cross sectional study in students from the School of Medicine, National University of Cordoba, using the SF-36 Survey and the Analogue Visual Scale for pain intensity. Continuous and categorical variables were analyzed with significance level of 0.05. Results: The population (n= 465) was 20.8 (± 0.11) years old, mostly women (57.73%). The SF-36 showed construct reliability and validity. The population presented better values for the physical summing component; with the dimensions physical function, pain, vitality, and mental health being greater in men (p < 0.05). The 86.06% of the population presented pain, women perceived it with greater intensity (p=0.0001) and correlated to pain dimension from SF-36. Co...

Methods: Epidemiological indicators were measured using national data from secondary sources: Infant mortality rate and mortality rate in children under 5; and percentage of coverage in measles vaccination in Argentina. Results: Results show a 54.2% decrease in infant mortality rate, and 54.5% in mortality of children under 5. The most common causes of death during the first five years of life are usually associated to perinatal problems and congenital anomalies. In relation to measles vaccination coverage, there is a positive evolution of this indicator, reaching 100% coverage in 2009. Conclusions: Infant mortality represents an undeniable indicator of avoidable and unnecessary deaths that can...

Maternal separation can interfere with growth and development of the brain and represents a signi... more Maternal separation can interfere with growth and development of the brain and represents a significant risk factor for adult psychopathology. In rodents, prolonged separation from the mother affects the behavioral and endocrine responses to stress for the lifetime of the animal. Limbic structures such as the anterodorsal thalamic nuclei (ADTN) play an important role in the control of neuroendocrine and sympathetic-adrenal function. In view of these findings we hypothesized that the function of the ADTN may be affected in an animal model of maternal deprivation. To test this hypothesis female rats were isolated 4.5 h daily, during the first 3 weeks of life and tested as adults. We evaluated plasma epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE), cardiac adrenoreceptors and anxiety responses after maternal deprivation and variable chronic stress (VCS) in ADTN-lesioned rats. Thirty days after ADTN lesion, in non-maternally deprived rats basal plasma NE concentration was greater and cardiac beta-adrenoreceptor density was lower than that in the sham-lesioned group. Maternal deprivation induced a significant increase in basal plasma NE concentration, which was greater in lesioned rats, and cardiac beta-adrenoreceptor density was decreased in lesioned rats. After VCS plasma catecholamine concentration was much greater in non-maternally deprived rats than in maternally-deprived rats; cardiac beta-adrenoreceptor density was decreased by VCS in both maternally-deprived and non-deprived rats, but more so in non-deprived rats, and further decreased by the ADTN lesion. In the plus maze test, the number of open arm entries was greater in the maternally deprived and in the stressed rats. Thus, sympathetic-adrenal medullary activation produced by VCS was much greater in non-deprived rats, and was linked to a down regulation of myocardial beta-adrenoceptors. The ADTN are not responsible for the reduced catecholamine responses to stress in maternally-deprived rats. Maternal deprivation or chronic stress also induced a long term anxiolytic effect, which was also not affected by ADTN lesion.

This increase is inhibited by the removal of the adrenal medulla, but injection of epinephrine in laparotomized-medullectomized rats returns fibrinogen levels to values similar to those observed in only laparotomized rats. Epinephrine administration to laparotomized rats increases the fibrinogen compared with the group of laparotomized rats without treatment, but epinephrine by itself does not modify plasma fibrinogen levels in uninjured rats. Epinephrine is apparently responsible for the increase of plasma fibrinogen in rats subjected to tissue injury, probably through beta adrenergic stimulation.

We specifically studied the cardiac function by evaluating: ventricle contractile force and norepinephrine response, affinity and density of β-adrenergic receptors, dynamic properties of myocardial membranes, and electrocardiography. Albino swiss mice (n = 250) were infected with 55 trypomastigotes, Tulahuen strain and studied at 35, 75, and 180 days post-infection, that correspond to the acute, indeterminate, and chronic phase respectively. Cardiac β-adrenergic receptors' affinity, myocardial contractility, and norepinephrine response progressively decreased from the acute to the chronic phase of the disease (p < 0.01). The density (expressed as fmol/mg.prot) of the receptors was similar to non-infected mice (71.96 ± 0.36) in both the acute (78.24 ± 1.67) and indeterminate phases (77.28 ± 0.91), but lower in the chronic disease (53.32 ± 0.71). Electrocardiographic abnormalities began in the acute phase and were found ...

This work was undertaken to evaluate plasma ACTH, adrenocortical activity, cardiac adrenoceptors density and affinity response to variable chronic stress (VCS) in anterodorsal thalamic nuclei (ADTN) lesioned rats. Thirty days after lesion, shamlesioned stressed animals increased plasma ACTH and corticosterone as compared to sham-lesioned unstressed animals (p < 0.05); lesioned rats increased ACTH levels after VCS (p < 0.05) as compared to unstressed-lesioned rats. Whereas in sham-lesion plasma corticosterone (C) increased after stress, in lesioned animals(C) remained unchanged as compared to unstressed-lesioned animals. In the stressed groups, adrenal C contents were below those found in unstressed rats. beta-receptors affinity, in all the experimental groups, was similar, but VCS sham-lesioned animals underwent a significant increa...
