The work is apparently coded with custom system in its society and can be seen as a reflection of social reality. The novel explores the custom system in Minangkabau society and reveals that nearly every member of the society is bound by the existing cultural norms. No one is brave enough to stand against the hegemony of the existing norms. The research focuses solely on the form of hegemony practices done by the elders in Minangkabau culture. This research is done by descriptive qualitative method through literary sociological approach by using the theory of power of hegemony proposed by Antonio Gramsci. The data are obtained by using reading and noting technique. The data source is the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck by Hamka. The results of the research consist of two points; (1) hegemony in the form of ideology namely authoritarianism. (2) hegemony in the forms of culture namely kinship system and social stratification in Minangkabau.

This paper is concerned about the adequacy of the theory of Grammatical Metaphor to account for w... more This paper is concerned about the adequacy of the theory of Grammatical Metaphor to account for world languages by applying the theoretical framework of Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics. Grammatical Metaphor is an incongruent coding which involves a change on the lexico-grammatical structure of a clause. Grammatical Metaphor divides into Ideational Metaphor and Interpersonal Metaphor. Ideational Metaphor is an incongruent coding involving the changes on the form of transitivity structures and the type of clauses. Interpersonal Metaphor divides into Interpersonal Metaphor of Mood and Interpersonal Metaphor of Modality. Interpersonal Metaphor of Mood refers to incongruent use of the speech function in terms of the change or transference of mood. Interpersonal Metaphor of Modality involves changes in the modality used but this point is not covered in this study. The sources of data were derived from various discourses in three different languages: Indonesian, English and Arabic. The objective of the research is to reveal how much the theory of Grammatical Metaphor is adequate to be applied to analyze clauses in the three world languages. The result shows that the theory of Grammatical Metaphor covering Ideational Metaphor and Interpersonal Metaphor of Mood has proved successful and adequate to analyze various discourses adopted as samples in the three languages. This fact constitutes convincing evidence that Halliday's theory of Grammatical Metaphor is adequate to account for world languages.

The analysis is conducted by using qualitative descriptive method. The main sources of data were derived from the novel and supported by some related books and other sources such as journals, articles, and essays from some websites. The data were analyzed by applying the theory of Javanese characters proposed by Achmad (2017) who notes that there are nine Javanese characters adopted in their life namely compliant, easy to mingle, working cooperatively, polite, friendly, alert and cautious, timid and shy, not self-forcing, and patient. The Javanese are generally considered as people who have soft and wise characters, particularly in their behaviour, and they always maintain to avoid dispute. The term Unggah-Ungguh 'to behave in good manners' is a prior tenet of Javanese people, especially in order to get comfort, serenity, tranquillity, peace, and blessing in life. The findings show that there are five Javanese characters which are vividly reflected in the novel namely easy to mingle, polite, patient, not self-forcing and timid and shy. Those characters are quite significant to put into practice in real life as they constitute dignified moral values to maintain peace and harmony among the members of a family, among the citizens of a nation, and among nations across the globe.

Epistemic modality refers to the use of modality which is based on the speaker's evaluation and judgment in relation to the degree of confidence of the knowledge on the proposition. It functions to comment on and evaluate an interpretation of reality in carrying out speech functions. Deontic modality indicates whether the proposition expressed by a command is obligatory, advisable or permissible according to some normative background such as law, morality, convention, etc. In many instances, the meanings of some modals are relative and complements to each other. The evidence of some extrinsic modalities such as must, should, may, and can indicates that they may fall under different types; thus, they are at the crossroads; two types of modality which may use the same realization but they goes to di...

Moral values are the standards of good and evil, which govern an individual's behavior and choices. Individual's morals may derive from society and government, religion, or self. When moral values derive from society and government they, of necessity, may change as the laws and morals of the society change. (Harris, 2012). There are two points of moral values analyzed in the novel. The first is hard work and the second is self-confidence and both are depicted through the words and actions of the major characters. Hard work is the key to success. Hard work always pays off. Hard work can turn sludge into gold. Hard work starts from where people stop looking for alternatives. (Tollander, 2011); the second is self-confidence, a belief in one's own ability when doing anything, by viewing things positively and realistically (Albert, 2010). The research is conducted by descriptive qualitative method proposed by Creswell (2010). The results show that there are two points of moral values in the novel. The first is hard work and the second is self-confidence and both of the points are described by the major characters.

The goal of this research is to examine whether the theory is adequateto be applied to analyze clause complexes in the novel Things Fall Apart written by Chinua Achebe. The study applied qualitative method as proposed by Sugiono (2017). The analysis focuses on the description of clause complexes used in the novel from both Interdependency Relation and Logico-semantic Relation. The finding shows that the theory of logical function is adequate to be applied to analyze clause complexes in the novel under research. The evidence is based on the fact that all types of clause complexes as postulated in the theory of logical function are found in the novel, as the sample of natural language. The types of clause complexes used in the novel cover paratactic elaboration, hypotactic elaboration, paratactic extension, hypotactic extension, paratactic enhancement, hypotactic enhancement, paratactic locution, hypotactic locution, paratactic idea, and hypotactic idea.

There are three points of discussion under this title: giving protection, defending rights and gratitude. Defending rights is associated with heroic deeds. A hero is a random citizen that rises to an occasion and performs an action of superhero proportions. Gratitude implies thankfulness or an appreciation of benefits conferred together with a desire, when practicable, to return those benefits. Defending rights is tied to human rights which are universally applicable to one and all. These are the significant components of heroism. One of the relevant and outstanding modern theories of heroism applied here is proposed by Gibbon (2009) stating that hero is just an average man who fights to solve a common problem in today’s society. The study is conducted with Descriptive Qualitative Method proposed by Haughman (2009) in which he states that Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that focuses on the...

Onomatopoeia refers to a word whose phonetic structure mimics a natural sound to represent the sound or action of the object that produces it. Onomatopoeia behaves differently in comparison to other processes of word formation. Its meaning lies outside the language itself due to its nature which is adopted from the natural sound. The data analysis technique was used in this research with descriptive qualitative analysis. The descriptive research attempted to describe and explain the data according to the theory proposed by Thomas (2004) who divides onomatopoeia into four groups based on the source of the sound: calls of animals, sounds of nature, sounds made by human, and sounds of other objects. Based on the result, the four types of onomatopoeia were found in the novel under research: human onomatopoeia, animal onomatopoeia, object onomatopoeia, and daily life ...

There always seems to be a hero in everyone"s life; everyone has one, and many act as one. A. hero is simply a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities. Despite the accuracy of any dictionary, a hero can be defined according to the mind of the beholder. Heroes have been constructed in many fictional literary works and myths, as well as in reality. This research is conducted by means of descriptive qualitative method proposed by Krathwohl (2010), and the theory of heroism applied is the one proposed by Kohen (2010). There are three forms of heroism showed by Kadji, the protagonist of the novel: courage, sacrifice and suffering. Kadji is still young but urged by his courage, he is ready to take an official assignment to finish the enemy of his state, named Shamad.
