All main technical problems were analyzed and proper constructional solutions were presented. Several characteristic types of destruction were detected, caused by natural deterioration and also by mechanical influences (war destruction, lack of conservation etc.). The main building structure has survived from the Baroque period, except for the wooden roof. Some of the cellar vaults and some of them over the first floor were also not destroyed. However, some main reconstruction work was done, probably in the last few years of the 19th century. For example, a break with a new staircase and some masonry vaults over the cellar were changed to ones of Klein type on steel beams. The main aim of the reconstruction was to strengthen the historical structure of the building and adapt it to the modern architecture and to reorganize the buildings inner space, but k...

W wyniku sukcesu ekonomicznego tych igrzysk ponad 100 budynków wysokich i wysokościowych ...

Artykuł przedstawia zastosowane rozwiązania projektowe z punktu widzenia innowacyjnej architektury, konstrukcji, założeń urbanistycznych, elementów bezpieczeństwa i budownictwa zrównoważonego. This trend appeared on the construction market along with the progress of advanced structural solutions and the high demand for luxury apartments with spectacular views. Two types of constructions can be distinguished within this typology: ultra-luxury super-slim towers with the exclusivity of one or two apartments per floor (e.g. located in Manhattan, New York) and other slender high-rise towers, built in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Melbourne, among others, which have multiple apartments on each floor. This paper presents a survey of selected slender high-rise buildings, where structural improvements in tall buildings developed over the recent decade are considered from the architectural and structural view.

Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya have the largest share in development of high-rise buildings. Those cities are very densely populated and moreover they are located in one of the most active seismic zones. The combination of these factors has resulted in the creation of sophisticated designs and innovative engineering solutions, especially in the field of design and construction of high-rise buildings. The foreign architectural studios (Jean Nouvel, Kohn Pedesen Associates, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) which specialize in the designing of skyscrapers, played a major role in the development of technological ideas and architectural forms for such extraordinary engineering structures. Among the projects completed by them, there are examples of high-rise buildings that set precedents for future development. An essential aspect which influences the design of high-rise buildings is the nec...

Re-use of old buildings when adapting them to new functions has become a common way to protect the significance of historical buildings and keep them for future generations as examples of the achievements of former architects and construction masters. Issues connected with the adaptation of an old university three-story building from 1866 that has exceptional artistic qualities is the subject of the analysis presented in this paper. Originally, the building was multifunctional, and intended for the activities of various university units. During the II World War, the main body of the building was seriously damaged. After the war, the building was reconstructed using the current building materials and construction solutions, and was handed over to the Medical Department of Wroclaw University. The building is now undergoing renovation, the purpose of which is to change its function into an office building. The greatest value of the building is its façade-with excellent proportions-which perfectly fits into the spatial context and the development of this part of the city. For this reason, the preservation of the building's main structure was the most important aspect of the renovation design process. The paper presents the results of the assessment of the building's technical state, analysis of the planned functional changes and renovation ideas, and finally, a description of the structural and constructional solutions adopted to solve the problems occurring during the renovation works.

The analysis of the machine’s foundations, which are subjected to static and dynamic loads, is a complex problem combining the issues of geotechnics, structural engineering, and vibration theory. The authors present a case study of the assessment of the foundation’s technical condition. The main objective of this study is to perform and compare experimental and numerical dynamic analysis which includes the measurement of the acceleration, speed, and amplitude of the natural vibrations of the foundation during the operational speed of the turbogenerator. In addition, auxiliary material tests were carried out to fully diagnose the foundation and obtain the material properties required for the numerical analysis. They included both destructive and non-destructive of concrete strength, the evaluation of the degree of its carbonation, and t...

Today, the monastery complex consists of 3 wings forming letter “U”, which is locked up from the north with the church building. The objects of analysis are two wings of the building, part of the south wing (ancient refectory) and the west wing (former monastic part – after secularization converted into distillery). All structural and technical problems that were found out during building examination were analyzed and solutions were adopted to solve them. Calculations which were carried out concerned the structural-material solutions and load-bearing capacity of all structural elements and connections between them. There were detected several characteristic types of destruction, caused by natural deterioration and also by mechanical influence (induced by war destruction, lack of conservation etc.). The building was originally used as a poorhouse and a hospital for children. The original Gothic masonry building on the site was a two-storey building with a cellar, situated in a corner of two streets. In the middle of the 19th century the building was converted into a school and then the first large-scale demolition of the hospital's Gothic walls took place. After the 2nd World War a school was also situated in the building, where it existed until the late nineties. The aim of the renovation process was to convert it into an exclusive office block. The design works were preceded by historical research and on-site investigations. Complex conversion of the object consisted in the reconstruction of the old building structure, creating the inner courtyard and covering it with a glass roof. In the existing part of the basement one of the longest single-nave vaults in Poland and the exquisite roof truss system with a lying bidding-rafter post deserved special attention during the renovation.
