In this experimental study, we aimed to assess the effects of different doses (5 and 30 mg/kg) of methylprednisolone (MP), which has anti-inflammatory effect, on renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Methods: Thirty-two male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 8). The sham group underwent midline laparotomy and dissection of the abdominal aorta without occlusion while the I/R group underwent suprarenal aortic ischemia for 45 minutes followed by 180 minutes of reperfusion. In the 5 mg/kg MP and 30 mg/kg MP groups, MP was administered intraperitoneally. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were obtained, and kidneys were extracted. Results: Pretreatment with methylprednisolone did not influence serum BUN and creatinine levels. Serum TNF-α levels and ischemia-modified albumin levels were significantly lower in the...

This study aimed to calculate the predictive value of internal carotid wall thickness in CTA that can predict whether a modified carotid eversion endarterectomy (MCEE) will result in a successful or not. Method This study was designed in a retrospective cross-sectional format. Consecutive 83 symptomatic carotid surgery patients who were operated in our hospital and had CTA were included in this study. The wall thickness of the internal carotid artery (ICA) 20 mm distal from the carotid bifurcation was calculated in axial sections using a three-dimensional imaging technique. In addition, all patients’ characteristics and laboratory findings were recorded. Patients who failed MCEE and required classical carotid endarterectomy were compared with patients who had succ...

Anesthesia management also differs from other areas of anesthesia in cardiovascular surgery in which cardiopulmonary bypass is used. These differences include stopping and restarting the heart and stopping ventilation. These applications should be easy to learn. Our aim was to create a book for all physicians and medical personnel working in this field, including anesthesia technicians and perfusionists, while preparing the Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia Management book. It would make us happy to see that our goal was fulfilled. In spite of all our efforts, due to mistakes that have been overlooked, we seek tolerance of readers. We would like to thank our colleagues who contributed to the preparation of the book and the Academician Publishing House.

This retrospective study aimed to share our experience with our collegues regarding lower extremity DVT treatments in our hospital. Materials and Methods: Between the years 2002-2006, 212 patients applied at our hospital as suffering from pain and swallow. Clinical signs and symptoms of DVT were classified according to the Wells scoreing. If well scoreing higher than 2, then patients got on doppler ultrasonography and thrombosis diagnosed patients were hospitalized. Results: It was found that Wells score of all patients was above 2 and DVT was observed in 173 patients (81.6 %). 88 patients (50.9%) were females and of the 85 patients (49.1%) were males, and avarage age 48. It was also found that there was no risk factors for DVT in the 36 (20.8%) patients while diagnosed the most common risk factors for DVT were cause of obstetric (28 patients; 16.2%) and immobiliz...

Methods A total of 152 patients older than 65 years (group 1: 61.8% male, mean age 69.0 ± 4.5 years) and 244 patients younger than 65 years (group 2: 48.8% male, mean age 45.7 ± 11.2 years) were included in the study. Ultrasound-guided catheter-directed foam sclerotherapy was performed in patients with great saphenous vein valvular incompetence and saphenofemoral junction incompetence. Occlusion status was recorded by ultrasonography. Venous clinical severity score and visual analog score were calculated pre- and post-intervention. Results Complete occlusion rate of the great saphenous vein at 12 months post-procedure for the groups 1 and 2 was 86.4% and 86.3%, respectively. Venous clinical severity score and visual analog score were significantly different before ultrasound-guided catheter-...

Our study focused on the efficiency of a sternal cable system combined with conventional steel wires for sternal fixation in patients suffering from moderate or extreme obesity and undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods: Prospectively collected data from 22 male and 41 female patients (a mean body mass index [BMI] of 37.9 ± 2.5 kg/m2) who underwent major cardiac surgery via median sternotomy and sternal closure using a multifilament sternal cable system were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Results: All patients were closed with a conjunction of two sternal cables and two traditional steel wires. There were two mortalities. There were no occurrences of sternal dehiscence or deep mediastinitis. Three patients suffered superficial sternal wound infections. The mean hospitalization time was 8.4 ± 2.5 days. Conclusion: Our study showed that our surgical technique using a sternal cable system in combinati...

Methods: One hundred and three patients were enrolled into the study. The exclusion criteria were previous central catheter procedure, history of thrombophlebitis on the upper limb and previous surgery on the upper limb. Among the remaining patients, those who fulfilled the physical examination criteria were included. The patients were divided into two groups as the control, DUS (-) group and the study group, DUS (+). The patients in the control group were taken into the procedure after a physical examination only. Brescio-Cimino method was preferred for all patients. Function of the AVF was controlled on the procedure day, at day 10, months 1, 3 and 6 as well as year 1 after the procedure. The results in both groups were statistically evaluat...

However, the frequency of late graft failure is a cause for research into graft protection. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of synthetic adhesive cyanoacrylate administration on the saphenous vein graft for preventing vascular damage due to internal pressure on the graft. In this study we enrolled 20 volunteer subjects who had undergone coronary artery bypass surgery and who had excess saphenous vein grafts. Perivascular cyanoacrylate was administered to one of two saphenous vein grafts explanted from each patient. The other saphenous vein graft from each patient was not treated and was used as the control. A model of the arterial system was created using a saphenous vein cardiopulmonary bypass system. Circulation was maintained at 120 mmHg for 45 minutes. Afterwards, the grafts were subjected to histopathological examination....

To solve this problem, the blood flow must be returned to the region as fast as possible. The adipose tissue contains progenitor cells with angiogenic potential and can be used to resolve the issue. In the present study, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from rat adipose tissue, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and their mixture were applied on the dorsum of a rat, which was traumatized and its contribution to vascular regeneration was reviewed. No application was made to the control group. The results showed that the percentage of necrotic area was significantly lower in the MSC group than that of all the other groups. When the VEGF group was compared to the VEGF + MSCs, the percentage of necrotic area was observed to be similiar. However, VEGF showed effects o...

It has been proposed as an early biomarker for various diseases associated with ischemia. We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum IMA and peripheral artery disease (PAD) and whether it is a risk marker for the severity of PAD. Methods This prospective case-control study included 100 patients with lower extremity PAD and 50 volunteers without. Patients with resting pain, ulcer, and gangrene were excluded from the study. Patients with PAD included in the study were divided into two groups as mild claudication and moderate-severe claudication. Adjusted-IMA levels were calculated according to the median albumin values of the groups. The basic clinical features and laboratory findings of the participants were recorded and compared. Possible risk factors for presence and severity of PAD and IMA levels were examined by logistic regression and rec...
