Using a Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN), this article focuses on the function, legacy, and relevance of current HBCUs. Using W. E. B. Du Bois’s “double consciousness” as a theoretical framework, each of the 12 contributing scholars address these questions: How have you reconciled your individual strivings? Has the HBCU placed a role in your reconciliation process? What SPN is emblematic of your reconciliation process? These questions are addressed through vivid narrative accounts that speak to the critical constructs of belonging—Black identity;...

The chemistry, kinship, resiliency, intelligence, and love that we have is unsurmountable. To my parents, James and Pauline, there is nothing I can ever say to you that would come remotely close to what is in my heart. You guys were made especially for me and I don't think anyone else could have come close to giving me what I needed as parents other than you. I am grateful, grateful, grateful. Your love and support sustain me and fuels me to be the best parent I can be. You both should have earned Ph.D.'s before me; you are two of the smartest people I know (along with Cousin Travis and Maurice). I wouldn't hesitate to match your intellectual minds up with anyone in academia. To my dad and my cousin, Dr. Richard Peagler, thanks for sharing your research with me. Your research was instrumental in helping me through my process. My Ne-Ne, my prayer warrior, I take you everywhere I go. Your voice is always there in my head giving me all the nuggets of wisdom you have to give. Thank you for always being so generous with your love and with your scriptures. To my Auntie Orel who was the inspiration behind one of the titles of my papers, you are ABSOLUTELY the best. My aunties and uncles, hands down, are the cream of the crop. There has never been a time in my entire life where I did not feel loved or special. I have too many of you to name personally and not enough paper, but you know who you are. You each are responsible for supporting a piece of this puzzle called Kala. You laugh with me, Marco Polo me, feed me, take vacations with me, lift me up and pray for me and my family. My cousins, FamBam the Experience, priceless! My Baton Rouge family, you guys made living in the city an experience I will never forget. We have enough jokes and commentary now to last a lifetime. Ms. Brenda and Nick, you are v family in every sense of the word. I love my entire crazy, sometimes dysfunctional family immensely and Thank you! To my Day Ones, the Trinity, we made it! Blood, Sweat, Tears, and many happy hours, but we made it. Your support, conversation, encouragement, honesty, and love made this journey worth it. I am so glad God linked us together. We balance each other out perfectly. This is our time! We came, we stayed, we prayed, we laughed, we wrote, and we conquered the three-article dissertation. Love you both to pieces. Wherever this journey takes us to next, we have vowed to continue to support one another and meet up at least annually to strengthen our relationship. My Ph.D. squad, you all rock! Thank you for all the stimulating conversations and pushing me to my personal best. Danielle, girl you are simply a jewel. You shine brighter than any diamond I have seen. Thank you for helping me with statistics and always being willing to review my work. My Soror Kristin, stayed focused and you got this! Thanks for being you and that says a mouthful. Continue to grow and walk into your destiny. Marvin, shaking my head, thank you. Nakia, thank you girl for looking out for me. We definitely needed one another to get through Dr. MacGregor and Dr. Sulentic-Dowell's class. I am so glad our paths crossed, and I hope we continue to support one another after this leg of our journey is over. Squad, Thank you! Zora and I coming to Baton Rouge has not been an easy task but thank you to the village that God has blessed us with: the Baudin, Beach, Rathcke, Clark, and Corban families. My Sorors of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., especially my line sisters, you truly are a sister's keeper. You fill my bucket each and every time. I love you and thank you! To my Blackie and my Mason who I lost along this journey, I will find you again someday laughing it up loudly in Heaven. To my Grandma, rest her soul, she use to joke about vi my first day of kindergarten. She said I came home saying, "ok, I'm good. I don't need to go back there." She must be beaming from ear to ear watching me get my Ph.D. and my granddaddy would have definitely pulled out his "real" wallet for this occasion. Rest their souls, I miss them all so much. I would trade this experience in a heartbeat just to have more time with them.

A Boolean search revealed 18 articles met criteria for consideration. Multiple reviews occurred to isolate the articles that contained all the search criteria and multiple reviews occurred that selected the Boolean phrase or phrases that the researcher was searching for. Thirteen of the 18 articles met one or more search criteria and were included in the review, however, no articles matched 100 percent for inclusion. Thus, indicating we are not going deep enough in our research of Blackness and its complexities and intersectionalities.

We contextualize our discussion through the lens of critical consciousness and critical media literacy by exploring the role of popular media in identity development/imposition for Black females. We outline issues of Black female identity politics by framing them through the description of critical media literacy as a 21 st century literacy, with Black Feminist Theory as our theoretical lens. Similar discussions have remained centered in the field of Media Studies and there has been inadequate attention to these issues in the education realm, particularly as they relate to Black females and their self-concept and self-empowerment.

Racial identity studies have also sought to predict student attitudes about race, psychological adjustment, and coping (Miller-Cotto & Brynes, 2016). Cross (1971) sought to trace the Black journey from self-hate to self-healing through his Nigrescence theory. As complicated as Blackness is, no one study in isolation will ever unpack its brilliance, excellence, resilience, nastiness, and multi-facetedness. This mixed-methods analysis is one of many attempts to explore more critically the associations between educational spaces, places, and Black identity development.
