The joint interface layering has been found to be the most effective way of applied damping treatment, which not only provides reasonable high loss factor but is also simple and easy to incorporate in any existing machine tool structure.

This new model is introduced based upon the empirical cost tolerance data of typical production process like rough milling and finish milling .In the present study, a new stochastic optimization algorithm based on hybridization of Simulated Annealing algorithm and Hook-Jeevs pattern search (SA-PS) has been used to solve the problem of tolerance optimization. The components of an assembly are manufactured using different machining operations. The process limits of the machine tool used for each operation puts limitation on the machining tolerances. Different machine tools have different process capability, thereby producing parts with different tolerances. This also leads to a set of necessary constraints...

The objective of this research work is to perform a thermo-mechanical analysis of functionally gradient material square laminated plate made of Aluminum / Zirconia and compare with pure metal and ceramic. The plates are assumed to have isotropic, two-constituent material distribution through the thickness, and the modulus of elasticity of the plate is assumed to vary according to a power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. To achieve this objective, we shall use first shear deformation theory of plates and numerical analysis will be accomplished using finite element model prepared in ANSYS software. The laminated Functionally Gradient Material plate is divided in to layers and their associated properties are then layered together to establish the through-the-thickness variation of material properties. The displacement fields for functionally gradient material plate structure...

Tolerance stack up is term used for describing the problem solving process in designing and manufacturing to calculate the effect of accumulated variation that is allowed by specified dimensions and tolerances. The stackup conditions based on worst case (WC) model and RSS model are not realistic in general, though these have been widely used in research because of their simplicity. To account for the realistic nature of the process distribution, a few modifications to these traditional approaches have been proposed. In this paper some nontraditional stack up condition methods like modified RSS Spott’s model and EMS are also analyzed to calculate accumulation of tolerance in assembly. A comparative cost analysis of different stack up models is solved by the combined Simulated Annealing and Pattern Search (SA-PS) algorithm. The application of proposed methodology has been demo...

Functionally gradient materials are one of the most widely used materials in various applications... more Functionally gradient materials are one of the most widely used materials in various applications because of their adaptability to different situations by changing the material constituents as per the requirement. Nowadays it is very easy to tailor the properties to serve specific purposes in functionally gradient material. Most structural components used in the field of engineeringcan be classified as beams, plates, or shells for analysis purposes. In this paper static analysis of functionally gradient material plate is carried out by sigmoid law and verified with the published results. The plate is modeled in step wise variation of the properties in thickness direction. The convergence study of the results is optimized by changing the mesh size and layer size. Power law and exponential laware applied for the same material and set of conditions. Results have been presented comparing with each other and the published results. In the analytical formulation the contacts between the balls and the races are considered as nonlinear springs, whose stiffness are obtained by using the Hertzian elastic contact deformation theory. The implicit type numerical integration technique Newmark- β with Newton-Raphson method is used to solve the nonlinear differential equations iteratively. The effect on vibrations of varying preload and the number of balls in the bearings is investigated for prefect bearings. For perfect bearings, vibrations occur at the ball passage frequency. The amplitudes of these vibrations are shown to be considerably reduced if the preload and number of balls are correctly selected. All results are presented in the form of Fast Fourier Transformations (FFT).

Allocation of manufacturing and design tolerances is an important step in product development. The focus of this paper is on the optimal solution of the least cost tolerance design. The modified exponential cost tolerance model has been considered. The SA-PS algorithm ,a nontraditional global optimization technique has been used as the solution methodology for its inherent advantages. Application of methodology is demonstrated on complex tolerancing product like Knuckle joint. Optimal result so obtained are compared with previous work done and found that individual tolerance and corresponding manufacturing cost is drastically reduced. Keywords--Simulated annealing, tolerance allocation, tolerance stack up ,constrained optimization

However, the associated aeroacoustic sound in the surrounding fluid also undergoes reduction, an aspect which has received less attention. This paper presents a numerical methodology for coupled aerodynamic and aeroacoustic calculations for flow past square cylinders with various splitter plate lengths. Computations are performed at a Re of 22000 using URANS technique and FW-H analogy. Observing that drag reduction and sound reduction occur at different splitter plate lengths, a two-objective optimization problem is posed to minimize the drag and OASPL simultaneously.
