This study aimed to assess the combined effect of leucine and cream-based lactic acid (novel cosmetic product), associated with the use of surface electrical stimulation to improve contour and facial tonus in women. A total of 23 women were randomly allocated into two groups: Experimental (EG)—use of the leucine-based cream and lactic acid + electrostimulation for facial toning (mean intensity 13 Hz and protocol in progression); and placebo (GP)—use of the placebo cream (without the addition of leucine and lactic acid) + stimulation with the same protocol as the EG. Each group used their cream daily and underwent the intervention protocol three x/week with stimulation for 40 min, for a total of 8 weeks. Three main outcomes were reported: angular variation of facial contour by means of photogrammetry, muscle tone through the electromyographic activity of the masseter and zygomatic muscl...

An integrative literature review was conducted, based on searches of databases for the period from 2014 to 2021. One-hundred-and-ten articles were found, of which 22 were considered eligible for inclusion. The statistical analyses methods used in the presence of bilateral pathologies was not clear in six (27.27%) cases and was inappropriate in another six (27.27%). A further five (22.72%) articles included only the most severely affected wrist for evaluation, while data from the right and left wrist were analyzed and described separately in four (18.18%) reports. Finally, only one (4.54%) RCT showed an adequate statistical approach. RCTs on clinical and surgical therapy of CTS do not use statistical models that include data repetition due to bilaterality when assessing outcomes.

Optimal postoperative pain management presents a challenge for healthcare providers across all su... more Optimal postoperative pain management presents a challenge for healthcare providers across all surgical specialties, since it is estimated that many patients submitted to major surgeries do not receive an adequate analgesic treatment, increasing the risk of complications, length-of-stay and costs for health assistance. The development of new agents for postoperative pain control creates possibilities for better combinations in preventive and multimodal analgesia. Recently, the use of gabapentinoids (gabapentin and pregabalin) in the perioperative period has become more popular. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses reveal that perioperative gabapentinoids may evoke a significant opioid-sparing effect and probably decrease the postoperative pain score. Gabapentinoids may be a good strategy for preventive and multimodal analgesia in major surgeries, particularly pregabalin, considering its pharmacokinetics profile. Situations where there are limitations of regional anesthesia tec...

Despite some authors have suggested that pulmonary function reduction might be a chronic complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), there are doubts whether the pulmonary function decrease is really caused by DM itself or if it represents a deleterious impact of ageing process. AIMS: This study aimed to compare respiratory muscle strength and pulmonary function in diabetic and nondiabetic elderly patients as well as to evaluate a possible correlation of this effect with glycemic control. METHHODS: For this case-control study, older adults (age over 60 years old) were randomly selected from an ageing study (EELO project) and they were separated in Diabetic (DG) and non-diabetic group (referred ascontrol group, CG). Respiratory muscle strength was assessed by measuring maximum static inspirator...
