This paper presents an empirical evaluation of an animated pedagogical agent, called Pat (Pedagog... more This paper presents an empirical evaluation of an animated pedagogical agent, called Pat (Pedagogical and Affective Tutor), which main goal is to provide emotional support to students: motivating and encouraging them and making them increase their efforts and their intrinsic motivation. The evaluation was accomplished with 39 students of a public middle school in order to verify the impact of the affective agent in the students' performance. The results indicate the effectiveness of the affective support in students' performance.

O presente artigo considera o impacto afetivo dos agentes pedagógicos animados, que reconhecem as emoções dos alunos, inseridos em ambientes virtuais de aprendizagem. Para tanto, busca averiguar o impacto desses personagens animados na aprendizagem de jovens através de um experimento de avaliação de um desses agentes, o agente Pat, na interação desses alunos em ambientes virtuais de aprendizagem.
