Sociopolitical and cultural-aesthetic mechanisms for the formation of stage exoticism in German-language operetta (1867–1933) will be highlighted. The focus is on Balkan exoticism in Viennese
operetta of the k. u. k. monarchy and colonial clichés in operetta of the interwar period, with special reference to the Berlin entertainment industry. In this way, topoi that recur in the transmedial representation of ethnic alterity in popular music theatre will be deciphered. The thesis is put forward that the image of Latin America constructed in "Clivia" not only allows conclusions to be drawn about the imaginations of the creators, but also provided representative shares of collective ideas in the sense of a cultural memory. For this analysis, the image of Latin America in the German-speaking world of the early 20th century is examined by abstracting individual phenomena. Finally, for the analysis of this picture in "Clivia", individual imagological topoi are highlighted and examined for their use in the operetta. The master's thesis follows a theoretical-methodological interweaving of discourse analysis, postcolonial studies and topos research.
