This dissertation is a study of the phase transition and melt crystallization of ferroelectric co... more This dissertation is a study of the phase transition and melt crystallization of ferroelectric copolymers of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] containing 83 mol% poly(vinylidene fluoride). The microstructure of crystallized P(VDF-TrFE) are characterized by vibrational spectroscopy to determine their chain conformation distribution, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) to measure the crystal structure and determine the content of a and (3 crystal phases. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is used to measure the transition temperatures and their enthalpies. P(VDF-TrFE) is a polymorphic system exhibiting a Curie transition below its melting temperature, at which the copolymer undergoes a long range conformational change from a predominantly trans structure ({3 phase) which can be ferroelectric, to a structure which has a mixture of trans and gauche conformations and is called the paraelectric a phase. Variable temperature FTTR studies have been made to follow the phase transition and to understand the multiple phase behavior that has been suggested for these copolymers.

It has also been effectively used in nu-merous pharmaceutical applica-tions, from the inspection of in-coming raw materials to the final testing of manufactured products. Improving product quality and lowering cost are drivers in decision making for many in-dustries. Ensuring product quality throughout the manu-facturing process can be time-consuming, with materials and product quarantined until test results are generated. Rapid testing by NIR spectroscopy, at all stages of the manufactur-ing process, can reduce manu-facturing time and provide

Process analytical technology (PAT) is being applied earlier in the development cycle of products as its benefits in providing increased process understanding are exploited. We will discuss some of the spectroscopic tools (UV-Vis, FTIR, NIR, Raman, headspace mass spectroscopy) that can be used to gain better insight into processes. Application of PAT early in the development process provides insights that aid in identifying critical quality attributes and process parameters, and provide a measure of process variability. Examples of how use of PAT has contributed t...

As the reaction opacity changes the spectral information is processed to determine which mode of measurement is optimal: reflectance or interactance immersion. A near IR spectrophotometer equipped with a unique probe is used which allows for optimal process monitoring with a single probe, rather than using multiple process interfaces to accommodate the change in the reaction medium. A with any near-IR method, models are created to allow for reproducible predictions of the phase changes that occur, and can also be used to quantitate the extent of reaction, the system composition, and other parameters.
