Objective: This randomized clinical trial aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of vitamin D3administration on time domain measures of heart rate variability in 51 male vitamin D3(<30- 10ng/ml) deficient ACO patients. Methods: Patients were given either vitaminD3 capsule or placebo per week orally for 3 months and serum vitamin D3 level and time domain parameters of heart rate variability were assessed before and after the intervention. For statistical analysis, independent and paired sample t test was used. Results: Before intervention, vitamin D3 level and time domain parameters of heart rate variability were similar in all patients but these outcome measures significantly increased in vitamin D3 treated but not in placebo treated patients after 3 months. Conclusion:In conclusion, vitaminD3therapy is effect...

Supplementation of vitamin D3 have shown evidence of increasing antioxidant enzymes level which neutralize these oxidants. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of vitamin D3 supplementation on two antioxidant enzyme levels in D3 deficient ACO patients. Methods: A double blinded placebo controlled randomized clinical trial (RCT) was carried out on 60 (sixty) D3 deficient [serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, 25(OH) D<30 ng/ml], male, smoker, stable ACO patients of age 40 to 80 years. This RCT was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov identifier NCT03931889. After the final selection, all the patients were randomly allocated to vitamin D3 supplemented ‘Study’ group (n=30) or placebo treated ‘Control’ group (n=30). Two antioxidant enzyme levels [plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)] were measured at their baseline. Subsequently, along with standard pha...

New approaches are needed to improve respiratory health and reduce premature mortality of chronic diseases by 30% till 2030 (UN Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs). Planetary health is defined as the health of human civilization and the state of the natural systems on which it depends. Planetary health and human health are interconnected, and both need to be considered by individuals and governments while addressing several SDGs. Results The concept of the Nature Step has evolved from innovative research indicating, how changed lifestyle in urban surroundings reduces contact with biodiverse environments, impoverishes microbiota, affects immune regulation and increases risk of NCDs. The Nature Step calls for strengthening connections to nature. Physical activity in natural environments shou...

Vitamin D3 deficiency has been found in patients with various morbid conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, Diabetes mellitus and malignancies including respiratory ailments. Objectives: This cross sectional study was designed to evaluate the status of this fat soluble vitamin D3 and its correlation with exercise tolerance in stable COPD patients. Methods: For this purpose, 47 male, smoker (>4 pack years), stable (who has not experienced any acute exacerbation, hospitalizations, urgent care visits, or changes in routine medications within 4 weeks prior to study), COPD patients (post bronchodilator FEV1/FVC<0.70; duration >4 years) of >40 years of age, were selected from the Out Patient Department of National Institute of Diseases of Chest and Hospital (NIDCH), ...

The proposed next phase of ARIA is Change Management (CM) with the aim of providing an active and healthy life to rhinitis sufferers and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the life cycle whatever their gender or socio-economic status in order to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease. ARIA has followed the 8-step model of Kotter to assess and implement the impact of rhinitis on asthma multimorbidity and to propose multimorbid guidelines. A second change management strategy is proposed by ARIA Phase 4 to increase self-medication and shared decision making in rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity. An innovation of ARIA has been the development and validation of IT evidence-based tools (MASK: Mobile Airways Sentinel Network) that can inform patient decisions on the bas...

Cigarette smoke can cause serious health problems, numerous diseases and death. Fortunately, people who stop smoking greatly reduce their risk for disease and premature death. Although the health benefits are greater for people who stop at earlier ages, cessation is beneficial at all ages. There are various methods and approaches in quitting smoking. Currently, there are about 1.3 billion smokers the world, most (84%) of them in developing countries. If current smoking trends continue, tobacco will kill 10 million people each year by 2020.

AIRWAYS-ICPs has strategic relevance to the European Union Health Strategy and will add value to existing public health knowledge by: 1) proposing a common framework of care pathways for chronic respiratory diseases, which will facilitate comparability and trans-national initiatives; 2) informing cost-effective policy development, strengthening in particular those on smoking and environment exposure; 3) aiding risk stratification in chronic disease patients, using a common strategy; 4) having a significant impact on the health of citizens in the short term (reduction of morbidity, improvement of education in children and of work in adults) and in the long-term (healthy ageing); 5) proposing a common simulation tool to assist physicians; and 6) ultimately reducing the healthcare burden (emergency visits, avoidable hospitalisations, disability and costs) while improving quality of life. In the longer term, the incidence of disease may be reduced by innovative prevention strategies. AIRWAYS-ICPs was initiated by Area 5 of the Action Plan B3 of the European Innovative Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. All stakeholders are involved (health and social care, patients, and policy makers).
