However, choosing an optimal carbon abatement strategy is difficult for many firms. This paper attempts to explore the appropriate carbon abatement strategy for firms that are regulated by cap-and-trade. Specifically, by bringing remanufacturing into consideration, this paper examines a manufacturer that has four alternative carbon abatement strategies: (1) do nothing, (2) invest in carbon abatement, (3) engage in remanufacturing, or (4) become involved in investment and remanufacturing together. The models of these four strategies are first developed in a monopolistic operating environment. The results show that among the four carbon abatement strategies, although the fourth strategy has the highest costs, it generates the largest profits for the manufacturer, passes the greatest benefits along to consumers, and has the best environmental performance. Next, this study is extended to a...

Besides, the comprehensive understanding of what influences users’ routine use intentions regarding mHealth services is lacking. Therefore, this study proposes a person–technology–health framework that underlines how personal factors (e.g., personal innovativeness in IT), technological factors (e.g., trust), and health factors (e.g., perceived health severity) jointly influence individuals’ routine use intentions regarding mHealth services. The proposed research model and related hypotheses were tested based on survey data from 270 respondents. The results indicate that personal innovativeness in IT, trust, and perceived health severity are important for enhancing routine use intention of mHealth servic...

Research paper thumbnail of Understanding users’ negative responses to recommendation algorithms in short-video platforms: a perspective based on the Stressor-Strain-Outcome (SSO) framework

Electronic Markets, 2021

However, not much is known regarding the dark side, especially users’ negative responses. From the perspective of recommendation features and information characteristics, this study aims to uncover users’ negative responses to such AI-based recommendation algorithms in the algorithm-driven context of short-video platforms. Drawing on the stressor-strain-outcome (SSO) framework, this study identifies information-related stressors and examines their influence on users’ negative responses to a recommendation algorithm. The results show that such algorithms’ greedy recommendation feature induces information narrowing, information redundancy, and information overload. These information factors predict users’ exhaustion, which in turn promotes users’ psychological reactance and discontinuance intention. This study adds knowledge on the dark side of recommendation algorithms.

This article suggests a conceptual framework for managing quality in the context of the new maritime security regime. We illustrate the application of this framework with an LSC using a ten-step approach to ensure regulatory compliance and quality conformance with the 24-Hour Advance Vessel Manifest Rule so that the legal requirements, as well as the operational and service goals, can be fully met. The article also provides procedural mechanisms and guidelines for LSCs and other maritime interests contemplating the implementation of maritime security with quality in view of similar undertakings.

Researchers are keen to address issues related to the prevention, mitigation, and recovery from security incidents and to the development of security management systems with cost efficiency consideration. This study presents a citation network analysis (CNA) of supply chain security (SCS) by analysing 143 sample SCS articles. Specifically, we conduct a cluster analysis and a main path analysis to identify the research clusters in SCS literature and show knowledge transformation in SCS chronically. We identify four research clusters, which are: 1) SCS conceptualisation and application; 2) security management systems; 3) transportation security; 4) terrorism, and the research gaps in each cluster are discussed in this review. This study helps reveal the current trend in SCS management research and suggest potential research directions for future study in SCS.

In this study, we investigate how two specific types of strategic orientations (i.e., sustainability orientation and operations orientation) affect the implementation of SSM practices. Furthermore, we examine whether such SSM practices can collectively yield performance benefits in the triple bottom line (TBL) (i.e., environmental, social, and economic performance) for buyer firms. Based on data collected from 708 manufacturing firms in multiple countries, our findings suggest that sustainability orientation promotes SSM practices whereas operations orientation impedes such practices. The results also reveal that SSM practices enhance environmental and social performance but bring no economic performance. This study adds knowledge to the sustainable management literature by distinguishing these two types of strategic orientations as antecedents influencing the implementation of SSM practices, which will benefit TBL.

Research paper thumbnail of Regulatory Policy Awareness and Environmental Supply Chain Cooperation in China: A Regulatory-Exchange-Theoretic Perspective

Developing countries, such as China, have adopted similar but generally flexible and voluntary regulations and policies. Using exchange theory with a focus on regulatory aspects as the theoretical lens, this paper develops propositions to examine if awareness of voluntary environmental regulatory policies is different among manufacturers as well as the relationship to ESCC practices adoption. Results from cluster analysis and multivariate analysis of variance for 308 responses identify three categories of Chinese manufacturers with respect to their awareness of environmental regulatory policies. These three categories include savvy, attentive, and nescient manufacturers. It was found that manufacturers characterized with higher environmental regulatory awareness tend to implement ESCC practices more intensively. Hierarchical regression analysis was further used to examine the relationship between awareness of regulatory policies and ESCC practices. Awareness of domestic regulatory policies has positive effects on green purchasing only for savvy manufacturers. Regression results show a nonlinear relationship between awareness of domestic regulatory policies and customer cooperation with environmental concerns, from slightly positive for nescient manufacturers and slightly negative for attentive manufacturers to significantly positive for savvy manufacturers.

Ecological modernization at the society level is influenced by restructuring policies and regulations. Some of these policies and regulations in China are focusing on enhancing energy savings and pollution reduction (ESPR). Based on a survey of 376 responses, we investigate whether different Chinese manufacturer clusters varying in their extent of implementing GSCM exist from this ecological modernization perspective. We also examine if Chinese manufacturers' awareness of domestic and international environmental ESPR-oriented compliance is related to GSCM implementation and whether a mediating effect of regulatory pressure plays a significant role. The results highlight the varying pace of Chinese manufacturers to ecologically modernize with GSCM practices and the significance of regulatory pressure to diffuse the practices adoption by Chinese manufacturing industry. Implications of this research go beyond the manufacturers investigated in this study where similar occurrence of these relationships may exist in other regions.

In achieving these performance goals, the importance of supplier commitment in managing the buyer-supplier relationship (BSR) should not be neglected in logistics operations. Due to organisational differences on operations priorities, it is a challenging task to manage a BSR which is inherently complex with many transactional and institutional aspects involved. This challenge is salient in logistics management with multiple upstream and downstream parties involved where the lack of concerted efforts can compromise performance of the entire logistics chain. For many enterprises, it remains unclear on how to nurture supplier commitment in support of their logistics operations. Considering this research void, we examine the antecedents of supplier commitment covering both transactional and institutional factors influencing supplier commitment in the BSR. Survey data collected from 358 suppliers of an international buying firm indicate that business uncertainty discourages supplier commitment, but the commitment can be reinforced with both explicit and implicit contracts used for governing the BSR.
