Early detection and remediation of heavy metals in soil and plants will ameliorate serious potential threats posed to human health and other components of the ecosystem. This study was conducted to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics and selected heavy metal concentration in soils and edible plant at three different refuse dumpsites in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State and compared with the permissible limits specified Original Research Article Emmanuel et al.; SARJNP, 3(3): 26-36, 2020; Article no.SARJNP.60289 27 by WHO/FAO standards. Soil samples were collected from a depth of 0 – 20 cm using a soil auger while plant samples were collected from same source as the soil. Samples were collected from an area with no history of dumpsites which served as control. Standard analytical procedures were used for physicochemical parameters whil...

General studies (GS) in tertiary education stands in, as should equip and prepare students with general principles of culture, philosophy and science so as to be well rounded to sustainably function in the society on graduation. Study probes knowledge base of randomly selected students of tertiary institutions in South East Nigeria on key environmental aspects and concerns. Several related literature showed limited quantitative works that highlighted strategies and necessary Environmental Education (EE) components to meet sustainable development goals. Study fills the gap. Inferential and descriptive statistics incorporated after reviews and other print media assessments. Results indicate a poor understanding of global, as well as local environmental challenges, so need to dedicate a course on EE which could spur environmental literacy. Estimation indicate potentia...

To protect and preserve food products from any unacceptable alteration in quality, food products are packaged and transported hygienically reaching the end consumer. To improve and develop the food packaging industry, nanotechnology has the capability to bring revolution in food industry. The application of nanotechnology in food packaging has mainly focused on the parameters related to food quality, safety, and stability. Moreover, nanotechnology has been explored to extend the shelf life of food product within the package through controlled release of preservatives/antimicrobials. Nanoparticle-based food packages have attained positive response from the market and consumer because they offer enhanced barrier and mechanical characteristics. In the food packaging sector, promising reports regarding nanotechnology applications have recognized this technology as being a significant research area. In contrast, developments in this area have indicated several ethical, environmental, and safety concerns. Different policies and regulation concerning nanoparticles applications in food packaging are being evaluated. This review focuses on the applications of nanotechnology in food packaging with special consideration to their effect on quality and safety of food commodities.
