The most popular mailing list managers generally use textual mail-based interfaces for all list operations, from subscription management to list administration. Unfortunately, anecdotal evidence suggests that most mailing list users, and many list administrators and moderators are novice to intermediate computer users; textual interfaces are often difficult to use effectively. This paper describes Mailman, the GNU mailing list manager, which offers a dramatic step forward in usability and integration over other mailing list management systems. Email has a key role in the explosive growth of the Internet, calling for Mailing List Management... more Email has a key role in the explosive growth of the Internet, calling for Mailing List Management Systems (MLMS) that can adapt to, and even foster, new forms of community organization as they emerge. A new MLMS, Mailman, is well suited to such evolution because it has been developed to be versatile and extensible. One factor contributing to these strengths is its implementation in Python. In this paper we will look at various aspects of Mailman's extensibility. We will consider how the system's design and how features of its implementation language, Python, factor into that extensibility.

We describe our experiences implementing security, process migration, and inter-process communication in a prototype system implemented using the object-oriented programming language Python. This infrastructure supports applications that are composed of multiple, autonomous agents that can migrate to use network resources more efficiently.
