NO has been shown to enhance wound healing, generating research interest in the incorporation of NO into thromboresistant polymers for medical devices. Such polymers can be processed by melt-spinning to create surgical suture type materials. These melt-spun sutures can have the high tensile strength and durability necessary for wound closure. NO release from the suture can be controlled by application of a biodegradable coating. In this work, an acrylonitrile- co -1-vinylimidazole (AN/VIM) copolymer was melt-spun and coated with PCL. The coated suture fibers were studied for NO storage and release. Addition of a PCL coating significantly slows release of the NO compared to the uncoated AN/VIM suture. Over 24 h, the coated suture released 46 (±12) µmol NO/g AN.

Cellulase fibers with diameters ranging from 100 to 500nm were fabricated for the first time by core–shell electrospinning. The enzymes in the core were cross-linked using glutaraldehyde and the PEO outer shell washed away using water and methanol to produce a free standing nonwoven enzyme fiber mat. The activity of the cross-linked protein fibers was determined to be 24% that of the free enzyme for hydrolysis of an insoluble paper substrate. Also, the cellulase was complexed with Ca2+ and electrospun for EDX analysis. Elemental mapping of Ca2+ showed fibers that cross-linked cellulase fibers maintained the fibrous morphology after washing away the PEO shell.

Additionally, the preparation and characterization of possibly new isostructural SAPO-UTD-3 and CoAPO-UTD-3 materials is reported.

A technique for coating small three-dimensional objects with molecular sieves using pulsed laser ... more A technique for coating small three-dimensional objects with molecular sieves using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been developed. Oriented UTD-1 zeolite films have been prepared on the surface of glass and steel beads by first vibrating the spheres in a laser-generated plume. The PLD film was subjected to a post-hydrothermal treatment resulting in a well-adhered highly crystalline UTD-1 film. The UTD-1 crystals are oriented so that the one-dimensional channels are normal to the substrate surface.

Laser ablation of MAPO-39 onto porous metal substrates followed by a post-hydrothermal treatment of the PLD film results in oriented crystalline MAPO-39 membranes. The MAPO-39 crystals grow with pores oriented primarily normal to the porous metal substrate. Decomposition of the template provides access to the membrane pores. Preliminary results for the separation of water/alcohol mixtures using the MAPO-39 oriented membrane are described. Selective permeation of water was observed in all the cases.

The metal complexes are included in the molecular sieves and are not removed by solvent extraction or ion-exchange methods. The molecular sieves were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) detection and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as elemental analysis.
