Since 2010 older voters have tended to vote Republican, with White older adults typically preferring Republican candidates, and Black and Hispanic older voters typically preferring Democratic candidates. In the 2020 election, the 65+ group of voters showed the same Republican candidate favorability but followed a slow downward trend from recent elections. Grounded in a demographic, economic, and generational context, and considering theory and research from gerontology, political science, psychology, and sociology, this presentation will explore older voter turnout and candidate choice in the 2020 presidential election. The focus will be on considering past trends and public polling data to examine three key issues in relation to the behavior of older voters in 2020: COVID-19, presidentia...

To do this, Catholic, public, and other private institutions must provide students opportunities to learn about and confront racism (Johnston, 2014). It is important that these institutions confront these issues because they employ faculty and staff who may experience systemic racism and can provide cultural knowledge to aid deconstructing racist ideologies. Undergraduate student evaluations of instructors or faculty, however, indicate discrimination against those perceived as non-white and with non-native English accents. This study focuses on one form of racism at a Catholic liberal arts college: bias against instructors who speak with a non-native English accent. This between-groups experimental study was guided by critical sociolinguistic theory and sociocultural theory to examine patterns in undergraduate engagement with material that varied...

President Trump’s campaign rhetoric also negatively characterized the Latinx population, a group tied to agricultural labor. Our research analyzes economic insecurity and identity politics as connected to vote share changes at the state and local levels between the 2016 and 2018 elections. Using identity theory, we posit that perceived threats, either economically or racially, will impact vote share. We find little evidence of a tax/tariff effect on changes in Republican vote share. However, race and ethnicity tied to Hispanic income gains or White-Black inequality in education impacted Republican vote share. We interpret these results as support for the argument that group-positional grievances motivated White voting behavior. All told, we find support for arguments that group-based grievances and perceived threats continu...
