Until then, Beowulf scholars accepted the paleographical dating of Neil R. Ker at s. X/XI, interpreted following Ker's sensibly cautious fifty-year range as circa 975 x 1025. I discussed in Beowulf and the Beowulf Manuscript, and presented at the Dating of Beowulf symposium in Toronto in 1980, the obvious but previously unremarked consequence that this dating range included nearly ten years of the reign of Cnut (1016–1035). This study challenges Dumville's attempt to restrict the dating of "late Square Anglo-Saxon minuscule" to the first sixteen years of the eleventh century.

It has never been solved. In the old days a riddle was taken more seriously than it is today, if the story is in any way true that Homer died of frustration over an unsolved one. Old English scholars are not so easily frustrated. In the case of Riddle 95, for instance, all past scholars have agreed that the text is corrupt, a catchall solution which seems to have escaped Homer. But the text of Riddle 95 is complete, and, since it can be divided into comprehensible syntactic units, it is possible that the text is accurate. The riddle can be solved, moreover, without resorting to emendation, and this is the strongest argument in favor of its textual

Searching multihierarchical XML encoding presents a number of unique challenges for both computer scientists and document experts. We present an extension of the XQuery language suitable for searching multihierarchical XML.
