The main aims of this study were to establish local DRLs for each CT imaging protocol as a reference point to evaluate the radiation dose indices and to compare our DRLs with those established in other countries and against the internationally reported guidelines. Materials and methods: 2000 CT dose reports of different adult imaging protocols from January 2021 until April 2022 were collected retrospectively at different hospitals in Jordan. Data were collected from CT scans that were performed using different types and models of CT scanners and included four adult non-enhanced, helical CT imaging protocols; Head, Chest, Abdomen-Pelvis, and Chest-Abdomen-Pelvis. Results: The average doses of CTDIvol, DLP, and effective dose were (65.11 mGy, 1232.71 mGy·cm, 2.83 mSv) for the head scan, (16.6 mGy, 586...

This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and practices toward antibiotic use among students at Yarmouk University Material and Method: A cross-sectional descriptive survey using a structured electronic version of valid questionnaire was distributed among participants. Google form was prepared based on available questionnaire in literature, revised by a group of academic pharmacist to validate the questionnaire. Test-retest was performed for a small group and cronbach alpha was calculated. The form was distributed randomly among under- and postgraduate students at Yarmouk University via their mails. Results: A total of 1154 individuals who completed questionnaires were analyzed. The knowledge of antibiotic use and resistance was quite good; 72.7% reported correct responses with a mean score of 16 out of 22. High rates of antibiotic use ...

To clarify the risk for breast cancer among the Malaysian women, a matched case-control study was conducted. METHOD Between October 2009 and April 2010, a survey was prospectively conducted among women admitted to clinics of Penang General Hospital for examination and/or treatment by using a questionnaire. Therefore, characteristics of patients diagnosed with breast cancer (n=150) were compared with control cases (n=150) admitted to hospital for non-neoplastic, non-hormone related diseases. RESULTS Family history of a distant relative with breast cancer (OR=2.84), history of first-degree relatives with breast cancer (OR=2.95), history of benign breast disease (OR=2.43), menstrual irregularity (OR=4.24), and use of oral contraceptive pills (OCP) (OR=2.15) were found to be significant risk factors for breast cancer in our population. This cross sectional descriptive study was undertaken with a representative cohort of atrial fibrillation patients undergoing anticoagulation therapy. Using prevalence based sampling techniques, a total of 339 patients were recruited from the Anticoagulation Clinics at two public hospitals in Penang, Malaysia. A bilingual specific instrument; Duke Anticoagulation Satisfaction Scale (DASS) and a generic instrument; the European Quality of Life scale (EQ-5D-3L) were used for data collection. The mean (SD) age of the patients was 60.4±14.5 years, with 204 (60.2%) males dominating the entire study. The majority of patients were from lower socioeconomic level and one third of subjects had a secondary level of education. DASS instrument presented a good average score of 70.8 (±19.8), while t...

Design: A cross-sectional design study was conducted at three shopping centers in Northern Jordan. Measures: Respondents were invited to fill a questionnaire assessed quality of life (QoL) using the SF-36 health survey. Results: Data was obtained from 915 Jordanian adults from the public with a mean age of 33.8 years (SD= 28.2). The total SF-36 score for the whole population was 71.2. Significantly, females reported lower SF-36 scores in both physical and emotional health domains (P= <0.001). Furthermore, elderly reported the lowest mean score in physical health scores (P=0.05). Physical health was dramatically affected by having health problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, back pain and asthma (P=0.05). On the other hand, emotional health domain was adversely affected only by monthly income (P<0.001). Conclusions: Quality of life among Jordanian populations is considered fine. Yo...

The aims of this study were to design, construct and evaluate a head and neck phantom for evaluation of three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) dose planning and delivery. A phantom of head and neck region of a medium built male patient with nasopharyngeal cancer was constructed from Perspex material. Thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) and ionization chamber were used after common and individual calibrations. Head and neck phantom was imaged, planned and irradiated conformally (3D-CRT). The planned doses by the Treatment Planning System (TPS) at Planning Target Volume (PTV) and Organs at Risk (OAR) were compared with the measured doses using the phantom. All dosimetric measurements were carried out in Mount Miriam Cancer Hospitals Penang, Malaysia. Excel and SPSS (version 17.0) software programs were used for data analysis. ANOVA ...
