When performing economic analysis using IROR method, multiple rates might exist, in such cases these rates might be misleading. This research aims at presenting a realistic approach for resolving the multiple rate of return (MROR) problem. A Proposed approach is presented and illustrated through demonstrative cases. The key advantage of the proposed approach is that it reflects real life opportunities and its decisions are consistent with worth methods as well as with other approaches. Relevant approaches of well-known authors are presented discussed and critiqued. © 2011 Jordan Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The main objective of this paper is to construct an algorithm for the formation of manufacturing ... more The main objective of this paper is to construct an algorithm for the formation of manufacturing cells with unbounded cell sizes, such that intercell movements are minimized. The assignment of parts to cells is then performed such that the number of exceptional parts is minimized. The solution of the algorithm starts from some initial conditions. A closed interval for the solution is then specified with a lower bound of the minimum inter-cell movements for the initial conditions and an upper bound on the inter-cell movements of the last cell. A combinatorial proof is provided to show that there exists at least one solution starting from the initial conditions.

Six customer categories are considered: residential, office, commercial mall, school, hospital and hotel. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the potential of utilizing different grid connected PDG under different conditions such as their location, size, served building category, number of people who share and own the equipment and system type whether wind, solar or hybrid based. It was found that solar systems are still not attractive for all locations due to their associated high cost, while wind systems would vary widely depending on the customer category, location and the size of the equipment. Based on the Benefit to Cost Ratio criterion, the most attractive sites for installing wind PDGS for residential communities are Ras Muneef, Mafraq, Aqaba, Irbid and H5, while it doesn’t seem attra...

Industrial plants, machines and equipment are becoming technologically more advanced and at the same time more complex and difficult to control. Therefore, the importance of the maintenance function has been greater than before, due to its role in maintaining and improving availability, performance efficiency, on-time deliveries, safety requirements and overall plant productivity. In this context, Jordanian industries are more and more realizing the importance of the maintenance function. This paper aims at assessing the maintenance requirements in local industries. To achieve this goal, a questionnaire was designed in order to investigate maintenance needs and problems, namely, maintenance planning, spare parts, equipment calibration and maintenance staff training. The questionnaire was distributed on a selected sample of Jordanian i...

Among the proposed approaches in the literature to handle the navigation problem of a mobile robot is the simple fuzzy reactive approach. This approach, however, occasionally suffers from two major problems, i.e., escaping from trap situations and the combinatorial explosion of the if-then rules in the inference engine. This paper presents a neuro-fuzzy reasoning approach for mobile robot navigation. The proposed approach has the advantage of greatly reducing the number of if-then rules by introducing weighting factors for the sensor inputs, thus inferring the reflexive conclusions from each input to the system rather than putting all the possible states of all the inputs to infer a single conclusion. Four simple neural networks are used to determine the weighting factors. Each neural network is responsible for determining the weighting facto...

The main problem in designing cellular manufacturing systems is cell formation, in other words; grouping parts with similar processing requirements into part families and their relevant machines into machine cells. In the process of forming such manufacturing cells, the designer is faced with the constraint of limited number of cells, therefore the designer needs to specify the number of cells in the design in advance. A number of heuristic methods were developed in the literature to come up with acceptable but not optimal results due to the complexity of these optimization problems. The high performance of computers can be utilized to come up with exact solutions for small batch manufacturing where the number of machines is no more than ten machines. The main objective of this paper is to develop an approach that not only specifies the number of cells in advance but also determines all the possible ways...

The effect of screw speed, melting temperature, cooling time, pressure, mold temperature, and ambient temperatures on the outcome of the process is investigated. The significant factors affecting the volume and mass of the blow molded bottles are identified. The results show that melting

This clean room, installed at the ÔEcole Nationale des Ing enieurs des Techniques des Industries Agricoles et Alimentaires (ENITIAA)Õ operates in the cleanliness class 10,000 with two laminar zones in the cleanliness class 100. Firstly, the ambience in this clean room has been studied with no processing taking place in terms of velocities, temperatures and comfort criteria. Results show that the zones at the opposite sides from the laminar zones are relatively stagnant and that the temperature is uniform all over the room. Thermal comfort criteria reveal quite good ambient conditions. In second place, we have investigated the optimization of the air change rate for a cleanliness class 10,000 during the manufacture of a fresh product and the in¯uence of the equipment location on the number of particles inside the clean room. Results show that the usual air change rates do not always ensure a cleanliness class 10,000 during the food-processing. On the other hand, this cleanliness class can be obtained with low air change rates if the process is suited to the clean room.
