However, it is utilized occasionally for various hidden motives and not only as an act of threatening others’ faces. This act is ascertained to be systematic according to Culpeper’s ‘Anatomy of impoliteness which is the adopted model in the present study. This model is applied to demonstrate the strategies that John Green adopts to demonstrate Van Houlten’s character that acts impolitely Green’s novel “The Fault in our Stars. The present study intends to reveal the types of impolite strategies that the writer utilizes to indicate this act of impoliteness and it also intend to reveal that impoliteness is a means to express grief, anger, and despair of life when losing our beloved.

Accordingly, organizational statements of text describe what is done by accounting for probabilities. In such an approach, no linguistic combination is impossible, but some are decidedly improbable. Hoey claims that the structural description of text cannot attain perfection in any area of language study, and that the formation of structural principles forces the linguist to consider the exceptions, and thus to discover new regularities through the process of matching patterns. The present study shed some light on the merit and demerits of such an approach and the possibility of applying it in the analysis of texts. The Matching Patterns In his work Patterns of Lexis in Text, Hoey (1991) introduces a detailed model of how the cohesive features combine to affect the organization of text. He believes...

This model has been used in the analysis of non-narrative texts. It is hypothesized that: The problem -Solution pattern is used in narrative texts. The lexical items can signal the rhetorical pattern in the text. The study aims at investigating the validity of the above hypotheses by using Hoey’s model of analysis on Hemingway’s Cat in the Rain. The analysis of the short story proved the validity of the proposed hypotheses and revealed the following: The writer followed a conventional order in presenting the information i.e. situation, problem, solution and evaluation. He communicated the rhetorical pattern to the reader through his clever use of the lexical items. The solution is al...

The paper analysed 20 US speeches to find out the common types of impoliteness strategies that are emerged in these gaffes. Results of the analysis show that 'positive' impoliteness has gained the outstanding occurrences followed by the 'negative' impoliteness. Other impoliteness strategies vary in rate according to the context in use. The speakers here tend to be impolite to make the listeners perceive their opinions. This is why 'positive' impoliteness takes place. 'Negative' impoliteness on the other hand, also shows fair use as the speakers sometimes tend to associate with others explicitly with negative aspects. Model of the analysis is adopted from Culpeper's (2005) that is flexible and applicable to different contexts.

The study adopts Jeffries model with the aid of corpus linguistic methods to show how text might be said to perform ideologies. It investigates how the image of war and politicians are presented. By using Naming and Describing tool, the analysis shows that the overall image of politicians is that they were aggressive when it comes to conduct war depending on what have they declared to be done.
