Active mucosal COM is one of the four types of COM. Active mucosal chronic otitis media is a longstanding infection of a part or whole of mucoperiosteal lining of middle ear cleft characterized by ear discharge and a permanent perforation. This is more prevalent in the underdeveloped countries and having potential complications. It is a disease well known for its recurrence and persistence despite treatment. The main contributing factor is improper use of antibiotics. So the knowledge of local pattern of infection is essential for efficacious treatment. Objective: To identify the microbes involved in active mucosal COM and their antimicrobial sensitivity against the commonly used antibiotics. Material & Methods: This was a Cross sectional study, conducted in ENT Department, Saidu Teaching Hospital Saidu Sharif Swat, KPK Pakistan from January 15th, 2018 to July 16...

It affects all age groups and both sexes. The cause may be local or systemic but in majority it is spontaneous and idiopathic. Trauma is considered to be a major aetiological factor. Various treatment protocols are utilized to control epistaxis derpending upon the type, severity and cause of bleeding. This descriptive study was designed to evaluate the aetiology and efficacy of management protocol of epistaxis in a tertiary care setting. 313 patients underwent prospective evaluation by consultant and non-consultant doctors with considerable experience in Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) emergencies management. Standard principles were followed in the management. This study demonstrated a bimodal distribution with incidence peaks in below 25 years…

Knowledge of the key landmarks of the facial nerve trunk is essential for safe and effective surgical intervention in the region of the parotid gland. In current practice, wide ranges of landmarks are used to identify the facial nerve trunk; however, there is much debate in the literature about the safety and reliability of each of these landmarks. The present study aim was therefore to evaluate the tragal pointer as a surgical landmark for identification of facial nerve trunk. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the tragal pointer as a surgical landmark for identification of facial nerve trunk. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This Cross sectional observational study was conducted in ENT Department, Saidu Teaching Hospital Saidu Sharif Swat, KPK Pakistan from January 2014 to July 2016. Thirty Patients having parotid lump, aged 10 to 70 years were admitted through OPD and operated after examination, relevant inv...

Etiology of discharging MRM cavity is multifactorial. Knowing and addressing the etiological factors at the time of surgery is important to provide dry and safe ear to the patient. Objective: To evaluate the post-operative status of mastoid cavity after modified radical mastoidectomy.Material and Methods: This prospective Cross sectional study was conducted among 450 patients who came for open mastoidectomies in ENT Department, Saidu Group of Teaching Hospitals, Saidu Sharif Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The study duration was from January 16, 2012 to December 09, 2019. Patients were postoperatively followed according to protocol and evaluated for residual cholestetoma and post mastoidectomy cavity status. The evaluation was conducted with endoscope and microscope. Data was obtained on pro-forma and SPSS 22 was used for analysis.Res...

Similarly, if there is bone erosion, then it is considered to be of severe type. The draw back in this scenario is thatcomparison for outcome cannot be carried out and hence objective learning is not possible due to absence of uniform classification. The European Academy of Otology and Neurotology and the Japanese Otological Society has recently introduced a classificationsystem grounded on cholesteatoma extension and its complications and similarly another is ChOLE-classification. In this studyboth staging system have been used primarily for extension of disease and ossicular chain status. Objective: To evaluate the intraoperative extent of disease and to analyze the nature of ossicular erosion in patients of squamosaltype of CSOM based on ChOLE and EAONO/JOS Classification.Material and Methods: This Retrospective chart review study was conduc...

It was a descriptive study carried out in the department of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Saidu Teaching Hospital swat, and was conducted from March 2005 to March 2006. A total of 42 cases collected from March 2005 to March 2006, admitted through casualty, OPD and referred by pediatric unit. All of them subjected to bronchoscopy as an emergency as well as an elective procedure. A total of 42 cases were included in the study. In 37 cases (88.09%) foreign bodies were removed successfully, while 4 cases (9.52%) were having no foreign body, only mucous plug was removed. One patient (2.32%) died due to cardiac arrest.
