The needle stick injury is a shared problem and a big hurdle in
providing safe care. This cross sectional study is conducted to
estimate the causes of needle stick injuries among staff nurses in a
tertiary care hospital Nawabshah.
Objectives
To calculate the prevalence of needle sticks injuries among staff nurses
and identify the factors which causes the needle injuries among nursing
staff.
Material and Methodology
A self-developed twelve items structured questions employed to collect
data from the study population. Sample size was 65. All nursing staff
working in the hospital were included in this study and other health care providers excluded from
study.
Result Response rate55(84.6%), Sustained from sharp injuries 44 (80%), 04 (7%) became victim of
hepatitis B & C, poor vaccination 44(80%), work load 42(76.3%), never read health policy 35(63.6%),
22(40%) lack of knowledge of needle stick injuries or sharp injuries and improper reporting system
were the main causes were determined, individual careless 19(34.5%) and 18(32%) sustained from
poor disposable of syringes.
Conclusion
Advance studies, update knowledge, revised curriculum & frequent workshops or lecture on safety
care should conduct frequently. There should be a proper reporting system in working areas.
Workload & individual careless is two-way responsibilities.
