Bangladesh achieved laudable success in achieving Millennium Development Goals including extension of water supply and sanitation coverage. The country would face more challenges as the number of semi-urban and urban dwellers grows each day, and grows at a faster rate. It is always difficult for a country like Bangladesh to become proactive to any apprehending challenges due to her limited financial strength. However, cost recovery approaches (CRA) for water supply services could reduce the burden. A typical CRA intends to recover the cost of investment (often only operating cost) through charging additional bills for the utility usages. Applicability of CRA can be determined by estimating the consumer’s willingness to pay (WTP) for the intended intervension. WTP is a widely used economic tool to assess the economic value of of non-marketed comm...

But Khurshed Alam and Mubashar Hasan highlight how Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s pragmatic approach to relations with India have resulted in significant improvements in the last five years. Further breakthroughs, for example on water sharing, are expected from Modi’s visit to Dhaka this weekend.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between social capital and poverty reduction with special reference to Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural setting of north-eastern Bangladesh, where primary data were collected from 310 households. Exploratory factor analysis was pursued to extract multiple dimensions of social capital. Afterward, multivariate binary logistic regression model was applied to measure the association between social capital dimensions and poverty. In this model, odds ratios were used to present the regression coefficients. Findings The study confirms that social network, norms of reciprocity, social trust and civic participation were associated with poverty. The logistic regression reveals that social trust, social networks, norms of reciprocity and civic participati...

In the present study the internal defects like homogeneity, porosity, elemental distribution, EPS aggregate and aerator distributor in the test samples have been observed by the measurement of gray value/optical density of the neutron radiographic images of these samples. From this measurement it is found that the neutron intensity/optical density variation with the pixel distance of the AOI of the NR images in both expanded polystyrene (EPS) aggregate poly brick and aerated brick samples comply almost same in nature with respect to the whole AOI but individually each AOI shows different nature from one AOI to another and it confirms that the elemental distribution within a AOI is almost homogeneous. Finally it was concluded that homogeneity, elemental distribution in the EPS aggregate p...

Research paper thumbnail of Poverty reduction through enabling factors

Design/methodology/approach This paper is an outcome of review of literature covered wide range of issues including sectoral contribution to economic growth but none has exclusively dealt with the instrumental role of the poverty reduction factors, insider’s view, long-term observations (1960-2014), and reviews of secondary data. Findings In order to reduce poverty, rather than attempting to change the “culture of poverty,” remove the “structural trap,” or “kin system as poverty trap” it can be achieved through harnessing the enabling factors of poverty reduction. Study argues that rather than focusing on “barriers” to poverty reduction, a country needs to identify and focus on its “potential” factors of poverty reduction. The dominant enabling factors for Bangladesh...

Immediate unavailability of an Orthopaedic surgeon adds to the embarrassment of the Obstetrician, and creates tension of the parents. Simple early measures can be taken to ease the situation. This paper is prepared with the intention of discussing some of the more common situations & their immediate management.Materials & Methods: Few patients with different birth trauma were treated in Dhaka Medical College Hospital & some other government & non government hospitals during January 2009 to June 2014. Different types of fractures, epiphyseal separation, Obstetric brachial Plexus palsy, Congenital Muscular Torticolis were treated by traction, splinting, plasters, physiotherapy & other conservative methods. Patients were followed up for long term assessment. Results: Results of fracture management were excellent with early union of all the cases. Soft tissue trauma, like Congenital Muscular...
