The common clinical manifestation is a slow-growing swelling. We report a case of a 16-year-old male patient presenting with extensive AF of the mandible. He underwent a conservative enucleation. The tumour recurred 2 years after the initial surgery, requiring the second enucleation. The patient has continued to be followed closely and has been disease-free for 4 years. Recent evidence suggests that the recurrent rate of AF is relatively high, and malignant transformation of AF may occur after recurrences or multiple surgeries. A conservative treatment approach with close surveillance is recommended. Anatomical limitations should be taken into account, especially when enucleation of AF in the posterior portion of the jaw is performed. Current surgical pathologic issues of the tumour are also discussed.

The CLND nose shares some features in part with the aging nose. This questionnaire survey examined: 1) the panel perceptions of the role of secondary cleft rhinoplasty in nasal rejuvenation; and 2) the influence of a medical background in cleft care, age and gender of the panel members on the estimated age of the CLND nose. Using a cross-sectional study design, we enrolled a random sample of adult laypersons and health care providers. The predictor variables were secondary cleft rhinoplasty (before/after) and a medical background in cleft care (yes/no). The outcome variable was the estimated age of nose in photographs derived from 8 German nonsyndromic CLND patients. Other study variables included age, gender, and career of the assessors. Appropriate descriptive and univariate statistics were computed, and a P value of <.05 was considered to be statistically significant. The sample consiste...

The files of 58,317 patients seeking dental treatments at the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University from 2002-2004 were retrieved and reviewed for medically compromised conditions. From a total of 58,317 patients, 7,167 patients (12.2%) had medically compromised conditions. The five most prevalent conditions in descending order were allergy, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart diseases and thyroid diseases. Even though the prevalence of medically compromised conditions in dental patients is not high, dentists should bear in mind that some of the patients may harbor such conditions which are contraindicated for certain dental procedures or medication or require special attention when treating these patients. Therefore, a thorough history taking and careful clinical examinations are mandatory before commencing any dental tr...

When salivary gland tumors do arise in children, they preferentially affect major salivary glands, but minor salivary gland tumors have also been reported. We reported the first case of palatal pleomorphic adenoma in a 13 year-old child from Thailand. She came to Sawanpracharak hospital with the chief complaint of a swelling at the left side of the palate. The oral mucosa covering the lesion was intact. Occlusal radiograph revealed no bony destruction. Incisional biopsy was performed on this patient. The biopsy showed several ducts which were lined by cuboidal cells. These ducts were surrounded by myoepithelial cells, some of which had the plasmacytoid appearance The patient was treated by wide local excision and no recurrence was observed 8 years after the surgery. Differential diagnoses of a palatal swelling in children and treatment of pleomorphic adenoma at the palate were also discu...

Research paper thumbnail of Adenomatoid odontogenic tumors: an analysis of 67 cases in a Thai population

The aim of this study was to determine the biologic profile of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumor ... more The aim of this study was to determine the biologic profile of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) in a Thai population. Sixty-seven cases of AOT registered from January 1974 to May 2006 were studied retrospectively. Age, sex, variants of AOT, site and extent of tumors, associated impacted teeth, initial clinical diagnoses, clinical presentations, and duration of symptoms were analyzed. All AOT cases were intraosseously located, of which 55.2% were follicular and 44.8% extrafollicular. The 2 variants together were found more frequently in the maxilla than in the mandible, with a ratio of 2:1. Females were affected more often than males, with a ratio of 1.8:1. The peak incidence (56.7%) was found in the second decade of life. The majority of AOT lesions (68.7%) was found in the anterior jaws. Adenomatoid odontogenic tumors were observed more often on the left side of jaws (50.7% vs. 38.8%). Canines were the most common teeth associated with follicular AOT (67.5%), and the maxilla...

The biopsy records of the participating institutions were reviewed for oral lesions from patients aged 65 years and older diagnosed from 2003 to 2012. Demographic data and the site of the lesions were collected. Histopathological diagnoses were categorized into two categories: non-neoplastic lesions (reactive/inflammatory lesion, cyst, allergic/immunologic disorders, potentially malignant disorders, infection and others) and neoplastic lesions (benign and malignant tumors). Data were analyzed by appropriate statistics using stata11. Of the 76 045 accessioned cases, 11 346 cases (14.92%) were in geriatric patients. The mean age of the patients was 72.98 ± 6.25 years. A total of 5010 cases (44.16%) were diagnosed in males, whereas 6336 cases (55.84%) were diagnosed in females. The male-to-female ratio was 0.79:1. Non-neoplastic lesions outnumbered the neoplastic counterpart. The five most prevalent oral lesions in the geriatric population in the present study in descending order of frequency were squamous cell carcinoma, focal fibrous hyperplasia (irritation fibroma), radicular cyst, osteomyelitis and epithelial dysplasia, respectively. The site of predilection was labial/buccal mucosa, followed by gingiva, mandibular bone, tongue and maxillary bone, respectively. The geriatric oral lesions from the present study showed a similar trend with studies based on histopathological data, but different from the studies based on clinical data. This study also shed more light on potentially malignant disorders, as well as benign and malignant tumors. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2015; ●●: ●●-●●.

Tumour angiogenesis correlates with prognosis of cancers in many organs. The aims of this study were to evaluate MVD as demonstrated by CD31 and CD105 in salivary gland tumours (SGTs), and to correlate the MVD results with clinicopathological characteristics of the tumours. Using a retrospective cohort study design, we enrolled SGTs patients at the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, over the 22-year period. The predictor variables included demographic, anatomic and histopathological parameters. The outcome measure was average CD31-MVD and CD105-MVD counted by the &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;hot spot&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; method. Descriptive, uni- and bivariate statistics were computed, and P &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;0.05 was considered statistically significant. The study sample consisted of 43 subjects with a mean age of 39.6 ± 17.8 years (range, 9-82), including 26 females (60.5%), diagnosed with SGTs. In this cohort, 58.1% of the cases were benign, and 83.7% were minor SGTs. There was a significant correlation between CD31-MVD and CD105-MVD (r = 0.8, P &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.001), but mean CD31-MVD and CD105-MVD were 17.7 ± 9.3 and 12.8 ± 7.4, respectively (P = 0.009). Age, gender and tumour site were not individually associated with significant differences between CD31-MVD and CD105-MVD. Tumours with myoepithelial cells had lower MVD than those without myoepithelial cells (P = 0.04 for CD31; P = 0.03 for CD105). Only CD105-MVD showed statistical difference between benign and malignant SGTs (P = 0.01). These results suggest that MVD in SGTs can be demonstrated by CD31 and CD105. Despite a strong correlation, CD31-MVD is always higher than CD105-MVD and cannot differentiate between benign and malignant SGTs. The presence of myoepithelial cells within SGTs affects the MVD analysis using either CD31 or CD105, while age, gender and tumour location do not.
