Focusing mainly on two transnational collective actions in Prague in 2000 and in Genoa in 2001, the research draws on participant observation, interviews with activists and analysis of the movement's alternative media. The feminist activism within the movement, the gendered tactics and their representation in the alternative media are analysed using the concept of diffusion. Although feminists are involved in the protests, and local Czech feminist activism was incited by the international mobilizations in Prague in 2000, they are often marginalized because of the emphasis on masculine confrontational and violent tactics used in demonstrations. The movement's alternative media further reproduce gender stereotypes. The visual representations of the tactics are traditionally gendered – women are depicted as fairies, men as fighters; this is because the movement does not want to appear weak and feminine, and seeks to be effective.

The intersection theory draws on the feminist critique of traditional class theory and on the challenge to feminism posed by ethnic women. The article develops thinking about various configurations of the intersection of inequalities and addresses mainly the case of marginalized women. However, the argument goes that the intersection of gender, class and racial/ethnic inequalities is not just a matter for disadvantaged groups because it has an impact on all groups in various relations. Class, gender and race/ethnicity should be understood as interlocked systems of both disadvantage and privilege. The intersection of inequalities is an approach intertwined with the development of social movements (women’s, labour and civil rights movements) in the USA and Western Europe. The article looks at why the intersection theory elaborated in the West mainly in the 1990s has not been reflected in Czech ge...

Two specific occasions are addressed: the demonstrations in Prague (2000) and Genoa (2001). Semiotic and content analyses are applied in a comparison of British and Czech alternative magazines. A brief history of the anti-globalisation movement, theories of alternative media, and gender representation in media is provided. The research shows that the anti-globalisation struggle is represented as gendered, and traditional gender roles are reproduced in the alternative media. Fewer women than men are represented in the media coverage, and women and men are shown performing different activities. Women are mostly associated with non-violent and creative actions, while men are more often depicted as fighters. Violent protest is considered more effective and important; male tactics are the norm. The British and Czech media do not differ significantly in terms of how men and women at the demonstrations or in the movement are represented.

Is it possible to connect the study of gender in a post communist East European country with the predominantly American intersection theory?

This subculture has been formed by a convergence of social movements and countercultures since the 1960s. Based on a qualitative media analysis of Czech alternative lifestyle magazine (Pravý domácí časopis-Real Homemade Magazine) which represents and co-creates alternative lifestyles and values with focus on environmental, spiritual and women's issues, the author looks for linkages of specific lifestyles and practices. They are united by values and principles, such as: turn to nature, freedom and autonomy, and change of consciousness. Also, the issues of collective identity, community and neo-tribes, are addressed.

While this movement has mainly spread to Anglophone countries, it is almost entirely absent from Eastern Europe and the Czech Republic in particular. The aim of this paper is to explain why the Transition movement-a grassroots community initiative-has not been successfully adopted in the post-socialist Czech Republic, and why the issue of climate change has not become an important frame for the local permaculture movement which introduced the idea of Transition to the country. The paper presents an analysis of ideological frames and framing processes of the local movement. Reasons identified for the movement's absence from the Czech Republic include the fact that it was largely overshadowed by the broader post-socialist transformation in Eastern Europe, that there was little public awareness of climate change and no real culture of community organising in the post-socialist period, and that a strong climate scepticism was promoted by Czech political elites. Other reasons relate to the ideological frames of the local permaculture movement, which is centred more on prognostic and mobilising frames, combined with a positive agenda and an emphasis on practical activities, and revolves around individualised strategies and frames in which permaculture and a nature religion (Anastasian spirituality) are linked to the concept of a 'family homestead'. The research draws on in-depth interviews with permaculture practitioners, media analysis, the study of documents, and participant observation.

It is aimed at adding a global dimension to Czech gender studies. It looks at the way in which globalisation is gendered and based on gender ideologies, and how global restructuring affects and change gender systems. Primarily economic globalisation is addressed, and the changes in the organisation of labour globally are examined. Global production is dependent on cheap women's labour in the factories of multinational corporations in the global south. The process of rendering labour more flexible and informal is associated with its feminisation. Care work and migration are also becoming feminised on a global scale. The article also analyses domestic work performed in the United States and Western Europe by women migrants from developing countries. All these processes are occurring within the context of neo-liberal policies and the changing role of states amidst a global restructuring, which needs to be examined from a gender perspective.
